FORT WORTH, Texas — New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church is preparing to host a Be SMART Lock Your Glock Summit in January during the 2027 MLK Redeem the Dream Weekend in Fort Worth.

The summit builds on the church’s first Be SMART Lock Your Glock Workshop, held October 15. Though turnout was small, organizers say the energy was contagious and interest was strong. Presentations featured Be SMART for Kids, NCTCOG Stop the Bleed, God’s Army, LULAC 22308, Cook Children’s AIM for Safety, Scared Stiff, Project Stand Up, and Giffords Gun Owners for Safety.

Following the workshop, New Mount Rose and the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas agreed to serve as a hub for gun safety education and training in Fort Worth’s 76104 central city communities.

“We believe that training and safety locks are essential to keeping our children safe,” said Pastor Kyev Tatum, founder of Lock Your Glock, a gun safety initiative that brings organizations together to help save lives, especially the lives of children in neighborhoods deeply affected by gun violence.

After a five-year-old girl died in an accidental shooting, Tatum was troubled to learn how often these tragedies can be prevented and how much more communities can do to protect children. He created Lock Your Glock and partnered with Miriam Elizabeth Sharma, RN, of Moms Demand Action to hold a joint workshop. They then invited additional gun safety and violence prevention organizations to participate in the October 15 event.

Neighbors can now receive free gun safety locks at New Mount Rose and through participating Ministers Justice Coalition churches and organizations.

“This is a game changer in our community,” Tatum said.

The workshop comes just ahead of New Mount Rose’s second Guns to Gardens event, where unwanted firearms will be transformed into garden tools. The event is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the church.

Organizers are now planning the January summit as part of the church’s broader MLK Weekend offerings.

“We already host a food bowl and a coats and shoes giveaway,” Tatum said. “A gun safety and training summit will add to our efforts during this important weekend.”

Volunteers are encouraged to join the Be SMART Lock Your Glock movement and help educate families and protect children.

“Our times demand it. History requires it. Our children deserve it, and God is still watching,” Tatum said.
