Safe Senior Spaces is a new ministry of New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church created to help senior adults remain safe, active, connected and valued in their homes, churches and communities.
The ministry will help facilitate participation in the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) at New Mount Rose. It will also assist other churches in developing Senior Saints ministries that address the employment, safety, health and social needs of older adults (https://www.dol.gov/agencies/eta/seniors).
Meaningful Employment for Mature Workers
SCSEP is the nation’s oldest federally funded employment and job-training program designed specifically for low-income, unemployed adults age 55 and older.
The program recognizes that senior adults possess valuable knowledge, experience, discipline and wisdom. Through paid community-service assignments, practical training and employment assistance, eligible participants can strengthen their skills, rebuild their confidence and prepare for permanent, unsubsidized employment.
New Mount Rose will seek to provide a welcoming, faith-centered environment where eligible senior adults can explore SCSEP opportunities, receive assistance navigating available services and participate in meaningful community-service activities.
Making Every Home a Safe Senior Space
Safe Senior Spaces will extend beyond the walls of the church and into the homes of senior adults—especially those who live alone, have limited incomes or need additional support to remain safely and independently in their homes.
The ministry will work with community partners, public-safety agencies, churches and volunteers to help provide senior households with essential safety resources, including:
- Emergency-preparedness kits
- Working smoke detectors
- Fire-safety education
- Basic first-aid supplies
- Emergency contact information
- Home-safety assessments and referrals
- Connections to employment, health and social services
- Regular wellness calls and caring visits
A senior adult should not have to face an emergency alone or live in a home without the basic equipment needed to provide warning, protection and peace of mind.
Preparedness Through Partnership
New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church collaborates with Tarrant County Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), the American Red Cross, the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas and other churches and community organizations to strengthen emergency preparedness and readiness.
Through these relationships, Safe Senior Spaces will help connect senior adults with safety education, emergency resources, disaster-preparedness information and trusted community support.
These partnerships will also help churches become better prepared to serve as reliable points of assistance before, during and after emergencies. By working together, participating organizations can help ensure that vulnerable senior adults are identified, informed, equipped and remembered when disasters occur.
Helping Churches Serve Their Senior Saints
Safe Senior Spaces will help churches develop or strengthen ministries dedicated to their senior members and older adults throughout their surrounding communities.
Participating churches can be encouraged and equipped to:
- Identify senior adults who need assistance
- Establish Senior Saints ministry teams
- Develop emergency contact lists for vulnerable seniors
- Conduct regular wellness calls and home visits
- Distribute emergency kits and smoke detectors
- Provide transportation and appointment assistance
- Connect seniors with SCSEP and other employment resources
- Offer technology, financial-literacy and safety training
- Create opportunities for fellowship and intergenerational service
- Develop partnerships with fire departments, healthcare providers and community organizations
- Prepare systems for checking on seniors before, during and after emergencies
This ministry will help churches move from occasionally recognizing their seniors to intentionally serving, protecting and engaging them throughout the year.
A Legacy of Opportunity
SCSEP began in 1964–1965 as part of Operation Mainstream, a demonstration project authorized under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. Early initiatives such as the Green Thumb Project focused heavily on creating opportunities for older adults in rural communities.
In 1973, Congress transformed the older-worker initiative into a permanent national program under the Older Americans Act. In 1978, it was officially designated as Title V of the Older Americans Act, which remains its primary statutory authority.
Over the decades, SCSEP has continued to help mature workers overcome employment barriers, update their skills and transition into permanent employment through paid community-service training.
Safe Senior Spaces will build upon that legacy by connecting employment preparation with ministry, safety, emergency readiness, fellowship and compassionate community service.
Our Senior Saints Still Have Work to Do
Safe Senior Spaces is founded upon a simple truth: growing older does not diminish a person’s value.
Our senior saints are not finished.
Through Safe Senior Spaces, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church will work to ensure that senior adults have opportunities to keep learning, earning, serving and living safely—with purpose, dignity and the support of a caring church family.
