PROPOSAL TO HOST LEGENDS IN THE LOCKER ROOM. The Prairie View Interscholastic League Book and Movie Tour.

Preserving the Stories. Honoring the Legends. Inspiring the Future.

Program Overview

Legends in the Locker Room is a traveling book and movie experience celebrating the extraordinary 50-year legacy of the Prairie View Interscholastic League—one of the most successful athletic and scholastic leagues in American history.

From 1920 to 1970, more than 500 segregated Black schools across Texas participated in the PVIL. Despite being denied equal facilities, funding and resources, their achievements were undeniable.

From athletics and marching bands to speech, debate and academic competition, PVIL students proved that limited resources could never limit determination, discipline or excellence.

Featured Presenters

The tour brings together three distinguished storytellers:

Coach Robert Brown
PVIL Hall of Honor recipient, legendary coach and chairman of the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association.

Michael Hurd
Award-winning sports journalist, U.S. Air Force veteran and author of Thursday Night Lights: The Story of Black High School Football in Texas.

Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr.
Historian, civil rights advocate and PVIL Legacy Coordinator.

Together, they will lead an unforgettable evening of cinema, conversation and celebration exploring the people, schools, rivalries and remarkable achievements that made the PVIL special.

Guests will step inside the locker rooms, classrooms, band halls and stadiums where history was made—and where generations of young people learned to compete, lead and excel.

Host Partnership Proposal

The PVIL Legacy Tour proposes a shared fundraising partnership between the PVIL Legacy Tour and the local PVIL Legacy Host Committee.

This fair-share partnership is designed to bring the PVIL story to the local community while generating financial support for future local preservation and educational projects.

Fundraising Goal: $5,000

The local PVIL Legacy Host Committee will be responsible for securing a minimum of $5,000 through sponsorships, donations, ticket sales or other approved fundraising activities.

The first $5,000 raised will be divided equally:

  • $2,500 to the PVIL Legacy Tour
  • $2,500 to the local PVIL Legacy Host Committee

All funds raised beyond the initial $5,000 will remain with the local PVIL Legacy Host Committee to support future projects dedicated to preserving, promoting and celebrating the local legacy of the Prairie View Interscholastic League.

What the Host Committee Will Receive

The PVIL Legacy Tour’s $2,500 participation fee includes:

  • Authorization to present the featured film during the approved event
  • A live book signing with author Michael Hurd
  • A question-and-answer session with legendary Coach Robert Brown
  • Historical commentary and discussion led by Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr.
  • An engaging evening of cinema, conversation, history and community celebration

Purpose of the Partnership

The partnership will:

  • Bring the history of the PVIL directly to the local community
  • Celebrate the coaches, educators, athletes, musicians and scholars who built the league
  • Raise awareness of the community’s historic Black schools and their contributions
  • Generate financial support for future local PVIL legacy projects
  • Encourage younger generations to value and preserve this important history

Join the Legacy

We invite the entire community to join this legendary trio for a night of excitement, entertainment and excellence.

Come hear the stories.
Come honor the legends.
Come help preserve the legacy.

They competed while segregated—but they excelled beyond measure.
