On Wednesday, May 2, 2018, I walked into New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church as a visiting minister. The congregation’s previous pastor had resigned, and I had been invited simply to teach Wednesday night Bible study.

I thought I was coming to teach one lesson—but the Lord was planting the first seed of a much greater assignment.

What began as a Bible study became a divine calling. God joined our lives with the life of this historic church and planted Tonya and me in the Morningside community for such a time as this. Eight years later, we can look across the field and see the fruit of faith, sacrifice, service and steadfast obedience.




The ground has not always been easy. We have encountered rocks, resistance, storms and seasons when the work seemed greater than the workers. But we kept our hands on the plow. We stayed focused on the assignment. We kept moving forward by faith.

Together, we have watched New Mount Rose become more than a church that gathers on Sunday morning. God is transforming us into His Holy House of Hospitality—a church that feeds the hungry, welcomes strangers, shelters neighbors, cultivates young minds, promotes health, pursues justice, grows food and carries the love of Jesus beyond the walls of the sanctuary. Through every challenge, God has remained faithful. Every bowl filled, every soul blessed, every child encouraged, every family served, every seed planted and every life changed reminds us that our labor has not been in vain.

This eighth anniversary is not merely a celebration of how far we have come. It is a declaration that we are not finished. There is still ground to cultivate, seed to sow, people to serve and a community to strengthen.

We will not become distracted by what is behind us. We will not be discouraged by what is beside us. We will remain devoted to what God has placed before us.

With our hands firmly on the plow and our eyes fixed on the promise, we will continue to serve, build, heal, grow and believe.




The Lord planted us here.
Grace has kept us here.
Faith will carry us forward.
