FORT WORTH, TEXAS - Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr., senior pastor of New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, has been selected to participate in the inaugural cohort of the JPS Citizens Healthcare Academy. Link: https://jpshealthnet.org/citizens-healthcare-academy

For Pastor Tatum, the opportunity is deeply personal.

He was born at JPS on December 19, 1965, amid serious complications. Through the dedicated care of the hospital’s medical team, he began breathing independently six days later—on Christmas Day.

“I literally owe my life to JPS, and I look forward to learning more about the extraordinary work they are doing to keep Tarrant County alive and healthy,” Pastor Tatum said.

Sixty years later, his relationship with JPS is coming full circle through a shared commitment to improving health outcomes in Fort Worth’s 76104 ZIP code.

Pastor Tatum grew up in 76104, graduated from Green B. Trimble Technical High School and now serves as senior pastor of New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church in the same community. The neighborhood continues to face serious health and economic disparities, including low life expectancy, high infant mortality and persistent poverty.




During the COVID-19 pandemic, JPS and New Mount Rose partnered several times to provide testing, vaccinations and other essential healthcare services through the church’s Clinic Without Walls.

Pastor Tatum believes the Academy will help him better understand the services JPS provides and connect more residents with the healthcare resources they need.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for us to lean in, learn and discover how we can help more people,” Pastor Tatum said. “Our goal is to ensure that New Mount Rose and the churches represented in the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas can connect residents throughout 76104 and beyond with life-changing healthcare resources.”

“Our Clinic Without Walls is more than a place where medical assistance is provided. It is a trusted and safe space where our neighbors can receive services, information and support that can improve their quality of life.”



About the JPS Citizens Healthcare Academy

The JPS Citizens Healthcare Academy is an interactive, six-week educational experience providing faith and community leaders with a behind-the-scenes look at JPS Health Network.

The Academy reflects JPS’ commitment to building the future of healthcare with the community—not merely for the community. By equipping local leaders with knowledge and insight, the program strengthens relationships between JPS and the communities it serves while supporting better health outcomes for generations to come.

Participants will gain firsthand insight into how JPS delivers care, hear directly from physicians and healthcare leaders, and learn how to remain engaged as informed advocates for community health.




Program Snapshot

  • Six consecutive Tuesdays
  • September 29–November 3, 2026
  • Noon–1:30 p.m.
  • Lunch provided at every session
  • Limited to 15–20 participants
  • Designed for faith and community leaders

Participation is by invitation through a member of the Tarrant County Commissioners Court, with each office permitted to appoint up to four participants.

The Academy is intended for leaders who demonstrate a strong interest in healthcare and community well-being, a willingness to participate in meaningful discussion and the ability to attend all six sessions.




Beyond the Academy

Graduates will be encouraged to continue their involvement with JPS through volunteer service, patient and family advisory councils, philanthropic support and community advocacy.

By developing informed partnerships today, the JPS Citizens Healthcare Academy is helping build a stronger and healthier Tarrant County for generations to come.
