Some African teenagers in Morningside are ready to earn their own money and build a future with their talents. The New Mount Rose Teen Coffeehouse Academy will give them a place to learn by doing—starting with a cup of coffee and developing practical skills in entrepreneurship, hospitality, and financial literacy.

Teens will learn how to prepare drinks, welcome customers, set prices, track sales and expenses, and make thoughtful decisions about money. Along the way, they’ll practice communication, teamwork, marketing, budgeting, and leadership.



What we mean by “micro business school”

The Academy is envisioned as a small, hands-on learning experience where teens learn in a close-knit group, receive individual guidance, and apply lessons to a real project. Instead of learning business concepts only from a book, students will put them into practice by developing and operating a supervised coffee cart.

The term micro business school describes the Academy’s small-group, project-based approach. The program can begin with focused entrepreneurship training and grow as students, mentors, and community partners help shape it.

Start with a pop-up coffee cart

The Academy can begin with a supervised coffee cart at church events. Teens can help choose the menu, create the brand, prepare drinks, serve customers, and review what they learned. As the program grows, students can help shape a larger coffeehouse vision.




A six-session learning path

  1. Coffee and hospitality: Explore coffee basics, cleanliness, and how to welcome customers.
  2. Practice the menu: Prepare brewed coffee, hot chocolate, and a specialty drink consistently.
  3. Understand the numbers: Calculate supply costs, set prices, record sales, and determine what remains after expenses.
  4. Build the brand: Create a name, menu, signs, and promotion for an upcoming event.
  5. Run the shop: Rotate through roles such as barista, cashier, greeter, inventory helper, and shift lead.
  6. Host a pop-up: Operate the cart with adult mentors, then review sales, customer feedback, and lessons learned.



Rooted in New Mount Rose’s Holy House of Hospitality, the Coffeehouse Academy will help young people serve their community while building practical skills to earn, save, and lead. Before serving drinks publicly, the church should confirm applicable food-handling and local requirements.
