WRITE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM: Rearing Our Own to Succeed While Raising Our Own to Serve. Proverbs 22:6

PROGRAM PURPOSE

The Write After School Program is a comprehensive after-school learning and youth development initiative designed to strengthen students academically while preparing them to read, write, think, investigate, build, create, solve problems, and serve.

Our educational model places a major emphasis on:

S.T.E.M.

SCIENCE • TECHNOLOGY • ENGINEERING • MATHEMATICS

STEM will not simply be one hour on the schedule.

STEM will be embedded throughout the entire program.

Students will learn to ask questions, investigate problems, collect information, test ideas, document results, improve designs, communicate discoveries, and apply what they learn to real-life challenges.

READ. WRITE. THINK. BUILD. GROW. SERVE.

READ

Reading is repetition. Students strengthen literacy through daily reading while learning to understand STEM vocabulary, instructions, informational texts, charts, diagrams, measurements, and data.

WRITE

Students maintain journals, explain experiments, document observations, write instructions, record measurements, describe solutions, and communicate what they have learned.

Writing becomes a tool for scientific thinking.

THINK

Students are challenged to ask:

Why? How? What happens if? What can we change? How can we make it better?

Critical thinking and problem-solving become daily habits.

BUILD

Engineering challenges allow students to design, build, test, fail, redesign, and try again.

Failure becomes part of discovery—not the end of learning.

GROW

Our gardening program becomes an outdoor STEM laboratory.

Students study soil, seeds, weather, water, insects, plant biology, nutrition, ecosystems, composting, irrigation, measurements, food production, and environmental stewardship.

SERVE

Students use what they learn to solve real problems and improve their community.

STEM IN EVERYTHING WE DO

Reading + STEM: science books, biographies of scientists and inventors, environmental literacy, technical vocabulary, research and comprehension.

Writing + STEM: STEM journals, lab notes, observations, hypotheses, reports, graphs, project descriptions and presentations.

Gardening + STEM: soil science, plant biology, weather, water conservation, irrigation, composting, measurements, food systems and environmental science.

Sports + STEM: heart rate, distance, speed, angles, force, motion, statistics, averages, nutrition and human biology.

Art + STEM: design, geometry, patterns, structures, digital creativity and STEAM projects.

Music + STEM: sound waves, vibration, rhythm, patterns, fractions, frequency and technology.

Service + STEM: students identify community problems and develop practical solutions.

DAILY PROGRAM DESIGN

3:00–4:50 PM

READ. WRITE. THINK.

Students receive a healthy snack/meal and participate in homework assistance, guided reading, writing, mathematics, STEM literacy, tutoring and academic skill development.

Daily learning can include a short STEM Challenge of the Day requiring students to read a problem, think about possible solutions, write their ideas and test their thinking.

4:50–6:00 PM

EXPLORE. EXPERIMENT. ENGINEER. ENGAGE.

This becomes our major hands-on discovery period.

Students rotate through Science Lab, Technology & Digital Learning, Engineering & Building, Mathematics in Action, Gardening & Agricultural Science, Art & Design, Music & Sound, Sports Science and Community Problem-Solving.

This is where students move from:

“Tell me how it works.”

to

“Let me figure out how it works.”

6:00–6:30 PM

REFLECT. RECORD. RESET.

Students clean their work areas, organize materials, update STEM journals and progress logs, record discoveries, discuss what worked and what did not, prepare for the next school day and set goals for tomorrow.

THE GARDEN BECOMES A LIVING STEM LAB

The outdoor garden can become one of the program’s strongest distinguishing features.

Students won’t simply plant vegetables.

They can measure garden beds, calculate area and perimeter, test soil, track temperatures, measure rainfall, study insects, investigate pollination, compare plant growth, chart data, design irrigation systems, study composting and calculate crop yields.

A child might plant a seed on Monday, measure it, research it, write about it, photograph it, graph its growth, calculate its yield and eventually help feed someone with it.

That is Science + Technology + Engineering + Mathematics + Literacy + Service working together.

STEM + SERVICE = SOLUTIONS

Older students especially should be challenged to identify real community problems and develop solutions.

Projects might explore food insecurity, community gardens, water conservation, neighborhood heat, recycling, emergency preparedness, healthy living or other age-appropriate community challenges.

This turns STEM into more than academics.

We aren’t only teaching children to answer questions.

We are teaching them to solve problems.

TUTOR. MENTOR. MONITOR.

TUTOR — Strengthen reading, writing, mathematics, science and classroom performance.

MENTOR — Develop character, curiosity, confidence, leadership, teamwork and responsibility.

MONITOR — Maintain individual progress records tracking reading, writing, mathematics, STEM participation, homework, behavior, attendance, projects and accomplishments.

Progress logs can help parents and teachers see not only what students attended—but what they actually learned.

OUR DESIRED OUTCOMES

By participating consistently, students should demonstrate growth in literacy, writing, mathematics, scientific reasoning, digital literacy, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, creativity, confidence and responsible behavior.

Most importantly, we want children to begin seeing themselves differently:
