SOCCER GOALS & GODLY SOULS. Developing a Positive Mindset to Build a Great Team. Titus 3:1–7
SOCCER GOALS & GODLY SOULS. Developing a Positive Mindset to Build a Great Team. Titus 3:1–7 | Pastor Kyev Tatum, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Fort Worth.
“Talent may win a match. Character wins a championship. Christ transforms both.”
Introduction
As the world watches the FIFA World Cup, millions will witness extraordinary athletic ability, breathtaking goals, and unforgettable moments of teamwork. Yet every championship team shares something deeper than talent. Behind every trophy is a culture built on discipline, sacrifice, humility, trust, and unity.
The Apostle Paul teaches the same principle in Titus 3.
Before Christ, people naturally live with selfishness, conflict, pride, deception, and division. These attitudes destroy relationships, weaken organizations, and prevent people from reaching their full potential.
But through the kindness, love, mercy, grace, and renewing power of the Holy Spirit, God develops a new mindset.
The same character that wins championships on the soccer field is the same character that builds healthy churches, strong families, thriving businesses, successful schools, and effective communities.
Character creates culture.
Culture determines success.
The Championship Starts in the Heart
Titus 3:1–3
Every coach understands something important.
The greatest opponent is not always the team on the other side of the field.
Sometimes the greatest opponent is the attitude inside the locker room.
Paul identifies ten attitudes that destroy every team.
Whether it is a soccer team…
A church…
A marriage…
A business…
Or a community…
These attitudes eventually produce defeat.
Ten Behaviors That Destroy Every Team
1. Slander Destroys Trust
When teammates criticize one another, trust disappears.
Championship Character: Encouragement
Great teammates speak confidence into one another.
2. Fighting Destroys Unity
Internal conflict always weakens external performance.
Championship Character: Peace
Winning teams settle disagreements and stay focused on the mission.
3. Foolishness Destroys Good Decisions
Poor decisions cost championships.
Championship Character: Wisdom
Champions learn, prepare, and think before they react.
4. Disobedience Destroys Leadership
No team succeeds if everyone ignores the coach.
Championship Character: Obedience
Great players trust the system because they trust the coach.
Likewise, believers trust Christ, our Head.
5. Deception Destroys Integrity
Hidden agendas destroy healthy organizations.
Championship Character: Truth
Trust is built when people are honest with one another.
6. Selfish Pleasure Destroys Sacrifice
Championships require sacrifice.
Selfish players never become great teammates.
Championship Character: Holiness
God calls believers to live for something greater than themselves.
7. Malice Destroys Relationships
Bitterness divides locker rooms…
Families…
Churches…
Businesses…
Communities.
Championship Character: Kindness
Kindness keeps teams together during difficult seasons.
8. Envy Destroys Chemistry
Jealous teammates eventually stop playing for one another.
Championship Character: Gratitude
Celebrate another person’s success as enthusiastically as your own.
9. Hatred Destroys Love
Teams without love eventually become groups of individuals wearing the same uniform.
Championship Character: Love
Love creates loyalty.
10. Division Destroys Victory
One divided locker room can destroy an entire season.
Championship Character: Unity
The greatest victories belong to teams that become one.
The Championship Mindset
Titus 3:4–7
Paul now changes the conversation.
He moves from who we were…
To who God is making us.
Notice every championship quality begins with God.
Kindness
builds compassion.
Love
builds relationships.
Mercy
builds forgiveness.
Regeneration
creates new people.
Renewal
creates new thinking.
Grace
builds humility.
Justification
removes condemnation.
Hope
creates perseverance.
Eternal Life
gives purpose beyond today’s game.
God does not simply improve behavior.
He transforms hearts.
The Beautiful Game
Soccer may be the greatest illustration of the Christian life.
One player cannot win alone.
A goalkeeper needs defenders.
Defenders need midfielders.
Midfielders need forwards.
Forwards need someone willing to pass the ball.
Everyone has a position.
Everyone has a purpose.
Everyone must trust the coach.
Everyone sacrifices for the good of the team.
Nobody wins unless everybody works together.
That is exactly how the Church operates.
Christ is our Head.
The Holy Spirit is our strength.
The Bible is our playbook.
Every believer has a spiritual gift.
Every believer has an assignment.
Every believer matters.
Paul reminds us in Titus that God’s people were never saved merely to attend church.
They were saved to become one body working together for one Kingdom.
The Championship Exchange
Healthy churches…
Healthy families…
Healthy businesses…
Healthy schools…
Healthy teams…
…all share the same culture.
They encourage more than they criticize.
They forgive more than they blame.
They serve more than they demand.
They celebrate more than they compete.
They unite more than they divide.
Culture always outweighs talent.
Closing Challenge
This World Cup season reminds us that championships are never won by the most talented individuals alone.
They are won by teams that trust one another.
Sacrifice for one another.
Encourage one another.
Serve one another.
Love one another.
The same is true in God’s Kingdom.
Jesus Christ did not call us to be spectators.
He called us to be teammates.
When kindness replaces criticism…
When mercy overcomes judgment…
When love conquers hatred…
When humility defeats pride…
When unity overcomes division…
The Church becomes God’s championship team—a witness to the world that transformed people can transform communities.
Big Idea
Every championship begins with character. Every winning culture begins with a transformed mind. Whether building a soccer team, a family, a business, or the Church of Jesus Christ, the greatest victories are achieved when people exchange selfish ambition for shared purpose, replace division with unity, and allow God’s grace to transform both their hearts and their relationships.
“Soccer Goals & Godly Souls” reminds us that the greatest victory is not lifting a trophy—it is becoming the kind of people God can use to build a championship culture that honors Him.
