FORT WORTH — Community leaders are inviting churches, businesses, civic organizations, and individual donors to help make one of Morningside’s largest neighborhood outreach events a success.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, two community events will take place simultaneously across the street from one another, bringing together education, healthy food, local agriculture, and neighborhood revitalization in a single day of service.

At House of Fadez, 1206 Glen Garden Drive, children will receive affordable $10 back-to-school haircuts, backpacks, hot dogs, drinks, and other school-year resources. Organizers also hope to provide 200 fully stocked backpacks for students and 100 My Teacher’s Helpers™ gift boxes to encourage local teachers as they prepare to welcome students back into the classroom.

Just across the street at New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, 2864 Mississippi Ave., the church’s Faith in the Farm initiative will host Watermelons in Morningside, a community produce market featuring thousands of pounds of sweet Texas watermelons and other fresh fruits and vegetables sold directly by Texas small farmers and ranchers.

Organizers say the event is about much more than fresh produce.

“Our vision is to bring the farm to the neighborhood,” said Pastor Kyev P. Tatum Sr. “When families have access to fresh food, students have the tools they need for school, teachers know they’re appreciated, and local farmers have a place to sell directly to the community, everyone benefits.”

The market is part of New Mount Rose’s broader efforts to improve food access and community health through initiatives such as the Community Food Bowl, the Funkytown Food Forest, Peace From A Pallet®, and Guns to Gardens. Church leaders say those efforts are designed to strengthen neighborhoods while supporting local agriculture and creating healthier communities.

The organizers are now seeking financial sponsors, in-kind donations, and volunteers to help meet this year’s goals. Contributions will help purchase school supplies, backpacks, teacher appreciation gifts, food, and other resources for participating families.

“This is truly a community effort,” Tatum said. “Whether you sponsor a backpack, donate school supplies, support a teacher, purchase fresh produce, or volunteer your time, you become part of something bigger than a single event. You’re investing in the future of Morningside.”

Organizers hope the day will demonstrate what can happen when neighborhood businesses, churches, farmers, nonprofits, and residents work together toward a common goal.

“It’s more than a back-to-school event and more than a farmers market,” Tatum said. “It’s a celebration of community, opportunity, and hope.”
