A Community Circle Comes Together to Honor a Hometown Hero
The Digging for Dignity Project, in partnership with New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, is leading a community-wide effort to commission a bronze memorial plaque honoring Florence Marie Cole Rawls, a member of the legendary 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion (Six Triple Eight) and a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal.
The plaque will be installed at New Trinity Cemetery at People’s Memorial Legacy Park, where Florence Rawls rests among generations of Black pioneers, veterans, and community builders whose stories helped shape North Texas history (https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/news/juneteenth-weekend-haltom-city-cemetery-preservation-6-20-2026/).
Florence Rawls was one of the courageous women who served in the 6888th Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female Women’s Army Corps unit deployed overseas during World War II. Faced with a massive backlog of military mail, the women of the Six Triple Eight restored morale and strengthened connections between service members and their families by ensuring that millions of letters reached their destinations.
Their mission was about more than delivering mail (https://fortworthreport.org/2026/06/22/digging-for-dignity-helps-restore-names-at-historic-cemetery/).
They delivered hope.
The discovery of Florence Rawls’ gravesite through the Digging for Dignity Juneteenth Find-A-Grave Project sparked renewed interest in preserving and restoring New Trinity Cemetery at People’s Memorial Legacy Park. Since then, volunteers, descendants, veterans, churches, civic organizations, and community partners have worked together to reconnect families with loved ones, uncover forgotten histories, and restore dignity to those whose stories deserve to be remembered.
The theme of this campaign, “Hope in an Envelope,” draws inspiration from both the work of the Six Triple Eight and the words of Scripture:
“You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men.”
— 2 Corinthians 3:2
Today, that message continues through the life and legacy of Florence Marie Cole Rawls.
As a circle of communities comes together to honor her service, this bronze plaque will stand as a permanent reminder that ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things, that forgotten stories can be rediscovered, and that hope still has the power to travel from one generation to the next.
