From One Simple Question to a Community Revolution.

“Where the World Comes Together and Jesus Changes Lives Forever.”

A Different Way to Build a Community

Community revolutions rarely begin with grand speeches.

They begin by listening.

For years, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church has served families throughout Fort Worth’s historic Morningside neighborhood by providing food, clothing, disaster relief, emergency assistance, and hope. Whether responding to apartment fires, distributing food, helping families through difficult times, or simply walking alongside neighbors, the church has built trusted relationships with residents from around the world who now call the 76104 community home (https://projectplay.org/).

Yet one of the church’s greatest breakthroughs did not begin inside the sanctuary.

It began on a neighborhood soccer field.

David and Aracely Ramos, leaders of God’s Army at New Mount Rose, chose not to assume they knew what neighborhood children wanted.

Instead, they asked one simple question.

“What would you all like to do?”

The answer came immediately.

“Soccer.”

That one answer changed everything.

Listening Became Leadership

David and Aracely Ramos purchased soccer goals.

They gathered soccer balls.

They opened the field.

They welcomed every child.

Within days, children representing countries from across the globe were playing together in Morningside Park.

Different languages.

Different cultures.

Different stories.

Different dreams.

Yet on one field, every child belonged.

Friendships began with one pass.

Trust began with one game.

Community began with one question.

From Soccer to a Strategy

Watching the ministry unfold, Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr. recognized that something much larger than soccer was taking place.

Drawing inspiration from research-based youth development—including the child-centered principles promoted through the Aspen Institute’s Project Play initiative—he began shaping a neighborhood strategy that combines recreation, education, service, leadership development, and Christian discipleship (https://youtu.be/7AvITEW7MpA?is=nBWKafUfFVEBNLPM).

That vision became:

GOALS FOR OUR SOULS: PROJECT PLAY MORNINGSIDE PARK

For New Mount Rose, soccer is not the destination.

It is the invitation.

Jesus Christ is the destination.

The ministry’s mission is simple:

We Provide the Goals. Jesus Wins Their Souls.

The Goals for Our Souls Model

Every practice becomes an opportunity to mentor.

Every game becomes an opportunity to build trust.

Every coach becomes a role model.

Every volunteer becomes a servant.

Every family becomes part of the community.

Every child becomes someone whose future matters.

When practice ends, the ministry continues.

Children and families are invited into New Mount Rose’s growing network of opportunities:

  • Project Play Morningside Park — Sports, recreation, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Pipeline to Possibilities — Education, career exploration, leadership, and citizenship opportunities.
  • Peace From a Pallet — Garden boxes, nutrition, environmental stewardship, and neighborhood beautification.
  • God’s Army — Mentoring, volunteerism, service projects, and youth leadership.
  • The Chancellor CommuniVersity Center — Lifelong learning, workforce development, citizenship preparation, and community education.

Together, these ministries create one pathway that serves the whole person.

One Vision

Whole Child.

Whole Family.

Whole Community.

Whole City.

Healthy Bodies.

Healthy Minds.

Healthy Families.

Healthy Neighborhoods.

Healthy Futures.

Healthy Souls.

The soccer field becomes a classroom.

The garden becomes a laboratory.

The church becomes a community hub.

The neighborhood becomes a place where children discover opportunity, belonging, hope, and purpose.

A Model for Fort Worth

While much of the world celebrates the FIFA World Cup, Morningside is demonstrating how the world’s game can help build stronger neighborhoods.

Imagine every Fort Worth park becoming a place where children are welcomed.

Families are connected.

Schools collaborate.

Churches serve.

Businesses invest.

Neighbors volunteer.

Communities flourish.

One park.

One neighborhood.

One generation at a time.

That is the vision of Goals for Our Souls: Project Play Morningside Park.
