THE CHURCH THAT KEEPS ON SERVING. New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church

THE CHURCH THAT KEEPS ON SERVING. New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church 2864 Mississippi Avenue Fort Worth, Texas 76104. Zelle: newmtrosembc@gmail.com

When Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr. accepted the call to lead New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church at 2864 Mississippi Avenue in the historic Morningside neighborhood of Fort Worth, he understood the weight of the assignment.

God had prepared him.

But preparation does not eliminate challenge.

From his formative years at Tarleton State University to University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University, and Texas State University, Pastor Tatum had cultivated a life of servant leadership—developing young leaders, strengthening institutions, and building bridges across communities.

Yet New Mount Rose presented his greatest test.

A historic sanctuary in need of significant renovation.

A membership of fewer than twenty-five.

Very little financial reserve.

But what stood at 2864 Mississippi Avenue was more than a building.

It was potential.

A Vision That Turned a Sanctuary into a Service Hub

Everything Pastor Tatum had been trained to do since 1984 converged in the 76104 zip code.

The first major outreach initiative came through collaboration with Pathway to Health, a free three-day mega clinic sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Medical care.

Dental services.

Vision screenings.

Radiology.

Spiritual counseling.

Through partnership and persistence, New Mount Rose helped serve more than 10,000 neighbors.

The small church on Mississippi Avenue became a regional epicenter of hope.

Bridging Community and Law Enforcement

In 2019, Pastor Tatum partnered with the Fort Worth Chief of Police to implement a community-law enforcement mediation initiative—bringing officers and community leaders into structured dialogue focused on communication and de-escalation.

What began locally evolved into a national model for improving policing relationships in urban communities.

During this season of bridge-building, Pastor Tatum also led the dedication of the MLK on Main Street Heritage Marker in downtown Fort Worth, making Fort Worth the first city in the nation to honor Dr. King on Main Street and commemorate his October 22, 1959 visit.

History was remembered.

Healing was pursued.

Pandemic Response: When the Church Became a Lifeline

When COVID-19 devastated communities in 2020, New Mount Rose did not retreat behind its walls.

Instead, from 2864 Mississippi Avenue, Pastor Tatum helped build an inner-city distribution system that would provide more than $25 million in personal protective equipment, testing, vaccines, food boxes, and emergency supplies to vulnerable residents over several years.

In 2021, New Mount Rose became the only church in Fort Worth to offer monoclonal antibody infusions—providing lifesaving access to residents without primary physicians.

The sanctuary became a survival center.

Then Winter Storm 2021 struck.

The historic building suffered catastrophic damage. Pipes burst. Water flooded the facility.

But even while rebuilding its own house, the church continued serving the city.

Because service was never secondary.

It was the mission.

From Survival to Strategy

Between 2022 and 2025, New Mount Rose expanded its influence across Fort Worth through:

• Healthcare access initiatives

• Educational partnerships

• Food distribution systems

• Workforce development programs

Through Skills City, USA and the Inner City Coffee Exchange, the church began building economic opportunity in 76104—one of the most economically challenged zip codes in Texas.

This was not charity.

It was transformation.

2026: The Year of the Servant Leader

In January 2026, when another winter storm hit Fort Worth, New Mount Rose once again opened its doors—becoming a 24-hour drop-off warming center in 76104.

While others closed, the church at 2864 Mississippi Avenue stayed open.

Again.

Because serving is not seasonal at New Mount Rose.

It is identity.

The Call Forward

Very few churches operate at this level of sustained community engagement.

Fewer still rebuild while serving.
