In Fort Worth’s 76104 ZIP code, life expectancy is the lowest in the state of Texas — just 67 years overall, and only 64 years for Black men.

These numbers are not random.

They are the result of systems, stress, and circumstances.

Behind many chronic illnesses in our community is something deeper: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

What Are ACEs?

Adverse Childhood Experiences include:

• Exposure to violence

• Living with substance abuse

• Parental incarceration

• Domestic instability

• Chronic poverty

• Neglect or emotional trauma

• Growing up in neighborhoods impacted by crime

Research shows that the more ACEs a child experiences, the higher their risk for:

• High blood pressure

• Hypertension

• Diabetes

• Heart disease

• Kidney disease

• Stroke

• Depression and substance use disorders

Toxic stress from childhood literally changes how the body responds to life. It elevates cortisol levels, damages cardiovascular health, and increases inflammation — setting the stage for chronic illness decades later.

In 76104, poverty and trauma are not just social issues — they are public health issues.

Why Early Screening Matters

For many inner-city families, financial insecurity delays doctor visits. Preventable conditions go undetected until they become emergencies.

High blood pressure often has no symptoms.

Diabetes can quietly damage kidneys.

Heart rhythm issues may go unnoticed.

By the time someone ends up in the ER, the damage is already done.

That is why we must screen early — especially in communities impacted by ACEs.

Breaking the Cycle

If ACEs help create the problem, early intervention helps redeem the outcome.

When we screen:

We detect early.

When we detect early:

We intervene early.

When we intervene early:

We extend life expectancy.

Screen to Redeem is about more than health checks.

It is about:

• Interrupting generational trauma

• Reducing toxic stress

• Preventing chronic disease

• Restoring hope

• Redeeming years lost too soon

We believe 76104 does not have to be defined by a 64-year life expectancy for Black men.

We believe life expectancy can rise.

We believe prevention can prevail.

We believe redemption is possible.
