PLOW FORWARD Luke 9:62: The Legacy of Kirk Franklin at New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Fort Worth, Texas.

“The Church Where Kirk Got His Start”

“No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” — Luke 9:62 (KJV)

Long before global stages, Grammy Awards, and sold-out arenas, the extraordinary journey of Kirk Franklin began in a sacred space rooted in faith, discipline, and community—New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Fort Worth, Texas. From its pulpit to its choir stand, this church has always understood that the work of God requires vision forward, not hesitation backward (https://vimeo.com/759903194).

New Mount Rose was not merely a church Kirk Franklin attended; it was the spiritual incubator that nurtured his calling. Within these walls, he was formed by the Black church tradition—where gospel music is not performance, but proclamation; not entertainment, but testimony. Here, young Kirk learned that music could carry theology, healing, protest, praise, and hope—often all at once.

Central to this legacy is the visionary leadership of Milford Kelly, the legendary pastor who led New Mount Rose with prophetic courage. Pastor Kelly discerned Kirk Franklin’s extraordinary musical and spiritual gifts at an early age and made a bold, faith-filled decision that would forever alter the landscape of gospel music.

In 1981, at just 11 years old, Kirk Franklin was appointed Minister of Music and adult choir director—making him one of the youngest Ministers of Music in the nation’s history. This historic appointment was not merely recognition of prodigious talent; it was an act of trust, mentorship, and obedience to God’s call. Pastor Kelly understood Luke 9:62 leadership: once you see the future God has revealed, you put your hand to the plow and move forward.

Under Pastor Kelly’s leadership and the spiritual covering of the church, the choir stand became Kirk’s classroom and the sanctuary became his training ground. New Mount Rose instilled in him structure, excellence, reverence, accountability, and spiritual discipline—values that would later define his revolutionary approach to gospel music and ministry.

It was within this congregation that Franklin began directing choirs, arranging music, and fusing traditional gospel foundations with contemporary and innovative sounds, while remaining firmly anchored in biblical truth. The church gave him room to grow, room to experiment, and—most importantly—room to be spiritually formed. New Mount Rose understood that calling requires cultivation, and they invested in him accordingly.

The global impact of Kirk Franklin’s ministry cannot be separated from the local faithfulness of New Mount Rose. His music would eventually transcend denominational, racial, cultural, and generational boundaries—but it was first tested, trusted, and tempered in a neighborhood church courageous enough to raise up its own and release them to the world.

In 2023, under the leadership of Kyev Tatum, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church formally honored this sacred legacy by naming its sanctuary the Kirk Franklin Chapel. This act affirmed the enduring bond between the church, the artist, and the city of Fort Worth—recognizing that the same sanctuary where a child once directed the choir became the launching pad for one of gospel music’s most influential voices.

From Milford Kelly to Kirk Franklin to Kyev Tatum, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church has been guided by visionary leadership that understands both legacy and destiny. What began as discerning a gifted child’s calling has evolved into cultivating generational purpose. This is leadership that plows forward—never looking back, never shrinking from responsibility, and never withholding opportunity from the next generation (https://vimeo.com/996717534).

Pastor Milford Kelly saw what could be. Pastor Kyev Tatum prepares what must be. Under Pastor Tatum’s stewardship, New Mount Rose remains a launching ground for purpose, creativity, and calling—a place where the next Kirk Franklin can be discovered, developed, disciplined, and released. The same sanctuary that once entrusted an 11-year-old with the choir continues to echo with opportunity for young voices, leaders, artists, and visionaries yet to be named.

This is not accidental—it is ancestral vision in motion. It is leadership rooted in the belief that God is still calling children, still anointing youth, and still shaping global voices in local churches (https://youtu.be/cRr3AF7R6EY).

At New Mount Rose, legacy is not preserved in memory alone—it is reproduced in every generation.

This is the church where Kirk got his start.
This is the soil where the seed was planted.
This is the house—and the leaders—that keep plowing forward.

And somewhere in these pews, practices, and praise moments,
the future of gospel music is already taking shape.
