When the temperature drops, compassion must rise.

New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church has long been a lifeline in Fort Worth’s 76104 community. During the pandemic, the church became a Harbor of Hope for families who felt forgotten and left behind. When systems were strained and doors were closed, New Mount Rose opened wide.

We know storms.

In February 2021, the historic winter freeze struck our own church building. Pipes burst. Water flooded the sanctuary. The damage required a full interior renovation. It was painful. It was costly. It was humbling.

But what tried to break us ultimately prepared us.

So when another dangerous storm rolled through in January 2026, Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr. was certain of one thing: this time, the church would not simply survive the storm — we would stand in it for someone else.

He reached out to a beloved couple, David and Aracely Ramos. Without hesitation, they said yes. They even brought their children, modeling firsthand what it means to serve “the least of these.” Compassion isn’t just something we preach — it’s something we practice.

The Abigayle Initiative soon joined the effort. Chef Meka arrived with her legendary BIG MAMA POTS, filling the building with the comforting aroma of homemade chicken noodle soup packed with fresh vegetables and tender chicken. For many of our unsheltered neighbors, it had been days since they had enjoyed a hot meal. That soup was more than nourishment — it was dignity in a bowl.

At first, only a few came.

Then word began to spread.

A local college shared the information with students. Neighbors told neighbors. Before long, the warming station was alive with quiet gratitude, gentle conversation, and the sacred rhythm of service in motion.

On Saturday night, a local police officer stopped by to ensure safety in the area. When he learned that we still had space available, he radioed other officers and encouraged them to bring additional neighbors seeking shelter.

And they came.

One by one, our unsheltered neighbors stepped out of the bitter cold and into the warmth of the sanctuary. They were welcomed with kindness, wrapped in blankets, and invited to rest peacefully on the pews.

The relief on their faces said everything.

Some sat quietly, absorbing the moment — almost in disbelief that a church would open its doors so freely. Others lay down immediately, exhaustion giving way to warmth and safety for the first time in days.

In those sacred hours, New Mount Rose was more than a building.

It was refuge.

It was mercy.

It was the hands and heart of Jesus.

We are deeply grateful to have been able to shield precious lives from the freezing cold while serving the Lord with gladness.

Pastor Tatum now carries a bold vision: to see 100 churches trained and prepared to open their doors during the next major storm.

“We have been given an opportunity,” Pastor Tatum says, “to become the heart, the hands, and the help of Jesus when we look out for the least of these.”

At New Mount Rose, we have always filled bowls and blessed souls.

Now, we are saving souls from the winter cold.

Our neighbors didn’t just find warmth.

They found love.

They found dignity.

They found grace.

They found it at New Mount Rose.

To God be the glory.
