FORT WORTH, TEXAS — The journey began in 1986, when a young Kyev P. Tatum, Sr. stepped onto the campus of the University of North Texas in Denton with a growing conviction that faith must move beyond words and into action. What started as student-led service and community advocacy would become a 40-year life’s work, placing Tatum on the frontlines of civil rights, justice, and transformational leadership across Texas and the nation.

By 1990, that calling was already impossible to ignore. Tatum received the University of North Texas Centennial Community Service Award, becoming the first African American recipient honored for his “projects to enhance the university.” The recognition marked an early and historic milestone—affirming a leader whose impact would soon extend far beyond the campus gates. From that moment forward, Tatum’s voice and vision continued to shape communities through civil rights advocacy and the defense of religious liberty nationwide.

Over the next four decades, Tatum’s leadership expanded through key roles with the Texas NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and ultimately as President of the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas. Anchored in the Kingian doctrine of social change, his work has consistently fused faith, nonviolence, discipline, and courageous action—standing boldly at the intersection of the church, the community, and public policy.

On Monday, January 19, 2026, Tatum will commemorate this 40-year civil rights milestone as a featured speaker at the Mesquite MLK Lunch and Learn, hosted by the Leadership of Mesquite—an event honoring both the legacy of Dr. King and the living work of those still carrying the movement forward.

From UNT in Denton to engagements at Texas State University in San Marcos, through advocacy at the Texas Capitol, and into the heart of Fort Worth’s historic 76104 community at New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, Tatum has exemplified faith-driven leadership, unshakable discipline, and an unwavering commitment to lift others. His journey reflects a lifetime devoted to freedom, opportunity, and mentorship, inspiring generations to answer the call to service.

As Senior Pastor of New Mount Rose, Tatum has transformed experience into action—building a national platform of faith-driven innovation and community empowerment. Under his leadership, the church has launched initiatives in youth mentorship, workforce development, specialty coffee entrepreneurship, and public health outreach, delivering practical and sustainable solutions to communities too often overlooked.

Beyond the pulpit, Tatum leads with vision through Skills City, USA, equipping underserved populations with mobile health services, workforce readiness, and trauma-informed care, providing pathways to dignity, self-sufficiency, and long-term success.

A dynamic and electrifying speaker, Tatum calls audiences to “Fight Like Forty-Two,” a principle rooted in faith, courage, and resilience, drawing inspiration from the lives of Jackie Robinson and Jesus Christ. His message challenges leaders, students, and congregations alike to take bold action, lead with integrity, and transform faith into purposeful impact.

At the heart of his mission is family. Married to Tonya Rochell Tatum, the couple are proud parents and grandparents, grounded in a faith that fuels both personal devotion and public service. Kyev P. Tatum, Sr. is more than a pastor—he is a minister on mission, proving that vision, courage, and conviction can ignite a generational legacy of justice, empowerment, and hope.
