DIGGING FOR DIGNITY: A Powerful Texas Homecoming for Our Heroes
HALTOM CITY, TEXAS — Buffalo Soldiers from across Texas, together with the Friends of New Trinity Cemetery, will proudly stand with American Legion Post 655 for Wreaths Across America on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the historic New Trinity Cemetery, located at 4001 NE 28th Street, Haltom City, Texas 76117 (https://www.fox4news.com/news/historic-black-cemetery-haltom-city-restored-time-veterans-day).
More than 500 Black veterans—warriors who fought for freedom, dignity, and the promise of a better America—are laid to rest on these sacred grounds. Among them is Technician Fifth Grade Florence Marie Cole Rawls, a proud member of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the all-Black, all-women WWII unit recently awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for their extraordinary service and trailblazing leadership.
“This is our honor and our sacred duty—to honor the ancestors who sacrificed so much for our freedom,” said Pastor Kyev Tatum of New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Fort Worth.
For years, American Legion Post 655 has faithfully placed wreaths across New Trinity Cemetery, ensuring these heroes are never forgotten. This year’s ceremony will shine even brighter as descendants, veterans, churches, civic leaders, Buffalo Soldiers, and representatives honoring the legacy of the 6888th unite in deep gratitude and celebration.
The event is open to the public, and community participation is welcomed (https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/video/hundreds-of-black-veterans-honored-at-new-trinity-cemetery/).
A moment of dignity.
A moment of remembrance.
A moment of Texas history coming alive.
