DIGGING FOR DIGNITY: American Legion Post 655 to Honor Buffalo Soldiers and 6888th Battalion Heroes at New Trinity Cemetery for Wreaths Across America.
HALTOM CITY, TEXAS — Building on the historic and spirit-filled Veterans Day rededication of New Trinity Cemetery—one of Tarrant County’s oldest and most sacred Freedmen cemeteries—American Legion Post 655 is preparing its next major tribute to the Black men and women who served this nation with courage, resilience, and devotion. This year, the Friends of New Trinity Cemetery will join Post 655 for the 3rd Annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 11 a.m., at the cemetery located at 28th Street and Beach Street in Haltom City (https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/tarrant-county/forgotten-black-cemetery-restored-honoring-more-than-500-buffalo-soldiers-tarrant-county-texas/287-a51ba10a-e803-42ff-9f89-e9388d5802c9)
A Year of Historic Celebration
As the new year begins, the Friends of New Trinity Cemetery will launch a year-long commemoration honoring the pioneering men and women of Tarrant County buried at this hallowed ground. This historic celebration marks three powerful milestones:
• 140th Anniversary of New Trinity Cemetery
• 160th Anniversary of the Buffalo Soldiers
• 250th Semiquincentennial of the United States of America
Families of the cemetery’s founder, Mother Frances Fretwell, along with descendants, community leaders, preservation advocates, and longtime caretakers, are preparing for what promises to be a glorious, unifying, and deeply meaningful year of remembrance (https://www.fox4news.com/news/historic-black-cemetery-haltom-city-restored-time-veterans-day).
Honoring Heroes Buried at New Trinity
More than 500 Black veterans rest at New Trinity Cemetery. Among them is Florence Marie Rawls, a Congressional Gold Medal recipient and distinguished member of the legendary 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-women military unit deployed overseas during World War II.
Their stories—of service, sacrifice, and unbreakable dignity—anchor the legacy New Trinity continues to protect.
The Wreaths Across America Mission
Wreaths Across America (WAA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, was established to continue the wreath-laying tradition begun at Arlington National Cemetery in 1992 by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester. Guided by its mission—Remember, Honor, Teach—WAA now coordinates ceremonies each December at more than 3,400 veterans cemeteries and memorial locations worldwide (https://youtu.be/3G537Faiohc?si=GDqKXfP5NEXALlHH).
New Trinity Cemetery is honored to be among these official sites. On December 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. CST, it will join thousands of communities across the nation in a synchronized moment of reverence and reflection.
