RAISING THE BARS: The Military Over Penitentiary or Cemetery Project. Proposed by Pastor Kyev Tatum, Sr

Deuteronomy 30:19: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.”

Mission Statement

To redeem, redirect, and restore young people in the inner city, ages 18 to 24, by lifting the standard and offering military service as a pathway of discipline, dignity, and destiny—so they may choose life over death, service over sin, and purpose over prison.

The Proposal

Which Bars Will You Choose? Officer’s Bars, Penitentiary Bars, or Casket Bars.

For every young man or woman between 18 and 24 who commits a felony, a choice must be given: four years of honorable service in any branch of the United States military—or the full weight of the criminal justice system. The choice belongs to the individual, but so do the consequences. If the four years are not completed, then the penalties of their actions will return.

This is not about punishment—it is about preparation. It seeks to:

Deter destructive decisions by presenting a road to redemption.

Discipline young lives through the rigor and responsibility of service.

Direct sons and daughters toward honor, opportunity, and a future unchained by a felony record.

Why It Matters

For today’s inner-city youth, there are only a handful of roads: a job, a college, a uniform, a prison cell, or a casket. Too many of our Black and Brown boys reject work, turn away from education, fall into the school-to-prison pipeline, or are lost to violence before their time.

This cycle must be broken. We must raise the bar and call our young people higher. We must show them that military service is not punishment but a pathway to discipline, structure, and salvation—a way out of penitentiary bars and away from casket bars.

The Word declares in Deuteronomy 30:19: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.”

That is the heart of this project: Choose life. Choose discipline. Choose service. Choose honor.
