HEART WORK: THE ART, SCIENCE & BUSINESS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE.

HEART WORK: THE ART, SCIENCE & BUSINESS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

Community service is more than volunteerism—it is heart work. It is an art, a science, and yes, even a business. At Skills City, USA in Fort Worth’s 76104 zip code, students are being equipped not only to serve, but also to build sustainable careers from their service. Skills City, USA is a workforce development hub powered by New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church in partnership with Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County. The program provides training tracks in film production, specialty coffee entrepreneurship, and leadership development, showing young people how to turn their gifts into pathways of purpose, productivity, and prosperity.

Recently, students had the opportunity to hear from two independent businesswomen who both got their start by helping others:

  • Dr. Elizabeth Branch, a retired college professor and program developer, introduced her new history game HISTO BINGO—a BINGO-style game that makes learning American history fun, engaging, and interactive.

  • Rosie Ilunga, an independent arts dealer from the Democratic Republic of Congo and a respected curator in the region, shared her journey as a cultural leader. She is preparing to host a Cancer Walk in October 2025 and a Peace Festival in November 2025, demonstrating how art and advocacy can unite communities across boundaries.

Their message to the students was clear: Knowing what to do is the science, knowing how to be creative is the art, but knowing how to become profitable is the business of community service.

Guiding this vision is Pastor Kyev Tatum, the founder of Skills City, USA and a nationally respected minister, activist, and community developer. Pastor Tatum has dedicated his life to transforming underserved neighborhoods by blending faith, education, and economic opportunity. Under his leadership, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church hosted the historic Guns to Gardens initiative in Texas, where unwanted firearms were safely collected and transformed into garden tools and crosses as symbols of life and hope. He has also spearheaded efforts to restore historic sites like the Prayer Room Coffeehouse and pioneered workforce readiness through the Inner City Coffee Exchange. Pastor Tatum’s work reflects a faith-fueled formula: to redeem, to rebuild, and to release the next generation into their God-given potential. His ministry at New Mount Rose has become a model for how churches can anchor communities in literacy, leadership, and life skills.

Skills City, USA is living proof that when art, science, and business meet in the spirit of service, the light of good works shines brightly—transforming lives, lifting communities, and glorifying God.
