Spicy. Sweet. Sassy. Healthy.

In Fort Worth’s 76104 zip code, life expectancy is the lowest in Texas—just 67 years. For Black men, it drops to 64. High blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, premature death, and infant mortality are cutting lives short in our neighborhood.

That’s where Sassy Beets steps in.

A bold new health-and-wealth initiative for the inner-city, Sassy Beets transforms donated canned beets into flavorful, pickled creations—“spicy, sweet, and sassy” treats that are as nutritious as they are delicious. But this isn’t just about food—it’s about beeting the odds in a community that deserves better health and stronger economic opportunity.

From Donation to Innovation

Thanks to a generous gift from Midwest Food Bank, Skills City, USA, in collaboration with New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church and Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County, has launched The Beets Project—the creative engine behind Sassy Beets.

Skills City is a workforce innovation hub rooted in 76104. We equip residents with skills in specialty coffee entrepreneurship, film production, and community-based business development, while addressing the underlying social and economic barriers that drive poor health. By linking faith, education, and enterprise, we’re proving that healthier lives and stronger livelihoods can grow side by side.

Why Beets Matter

Beets are a nutritional powerhouse—rich in compounds that:

  • Boost circulation
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Deliver essential vitamins and minerals

These benefits strike directly at the health challenges reducing life expectancy in 76104.

Through Sassy Beets, students and residents are:

  • Learning the science of nutrition and food preservation
  • Practicing entrepreneurship by creating and marketing healthy products
  • Engaging in a movement that’s flavorful, sustainable, and life-changing

More Than a Beet — A Movement

What started as a pallet of canned beets has grown into a living lesson in health empowerment and community enterprise. Sassy Beets proves that with the right partnerships, creativity, and commitment, we can turn a humble vegetable into a symbol of hope, health, and wealth for Fort Worth’s most underserved community.
