FORT WORTH, TEXAS — In a time when many young people are searching for direction, a bold new movement is rising from the heart of Fort Worth’s 76104 community. Camp Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Twenty-Fourth, launched by New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church in partnership with the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas and Buffalo Soldiers from across North Texas, is a mission-driven program dedicated to building youth through discipline, determination, and dedication.
More than just a summer camp, Camp Buffalo Soldiers is a life-skills boot camp for the mind, body, and spirit. It challenges young men to dig deep, discover their potential, and develop the character needed to lead in today’s world. Rooted in the legacy of African American soldiers who served with honor despite adversity, the camp teaches that success doesn’t come from shortcuts — it comes from structure, sacrifice, and self-respect.
“This camp is about showing our young people that greatness is not given — it’s earned,” said Pastor Kyev Tatum, founder of Camp Buffalo Soldiers. “Through discipline, faith, and a commitment to excellence, they can overcome anything and become anything.”
And just days after opening its gates, Camp Buffalo Soldiers was met with an extraordinary affirmation: its Young Buffalo Soldiers were invited to attend the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony honoring the 369th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters, in Washington, D.C. on September 3, 2025.
These courageous Black soldiers of World War I, known for their valor and unbreakable spirit, are a perfect example of what Camp Buffalo Soldiers seeks to instill in youth today — resilience in the face of rejection, pride in the face of pressure, and commitment in the face of challenge.
The invitation is more than a field trip — it’s a call to action. A reminder that our youth are not only heirs of a powerful legacy, but also the architects of our future.
Earlier this year, young girls from New Mount Rose’s companion program, Little Miss Six Triple Eight, traveled to the nation’s capital to honor the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion — the only all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas in WWII. Their journey, too, was a lesson in excellence, determination, and what it means to represent something greater than oneself.
Now, both programs stand as pillars of purpose in Fort Worth, urging our youth to trade in distractions for discipline, excuses for execution, and complacency for courage.
