WHEN DOVES FLY: Fort Worth Declares July 8, 2025, as 6888th Day.

A Joyful Celebration of the Discipline, Determination, and Distinction of the 6888th Central Postal Battalion.

Fort Worth, TX — With hearts overflowing with joy, gratitude, and pride, the Texas 6888th Project, in proud partnership with the City of Fort Worth, officially proclaims July 8, 2025, as 6888th Day—a vibrant day dedicated to celebrating the unwavering courage, leadership, and legacy of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.

We gather in unity and joy to honor the remarkable women of the 6888th—the first and only all-Black and Latina, all-female battalion to be deployed overseas in the history of the United States military. Under the exceptional leadership of Lt. Colonel Charity Adams Earley, these heroic women overcame racism, sexism, and the harsh realities of war to complete a mission few believed was possible.

With discipline, determination, and resounding distinction, the 6888th cleared over 17 million pieces of backlogged mail across Europe, restoring vital communication and uplifting the morale of U.S. service members and their families. Their historic success shattered stereotypes and redefined who could serve, lead, and excel.

On this day of celebration, we also pause to remember three of these brave soldiers who gave their lives in service near Rouen, France:

PFC Mary H. Bankston

PFC Mary J. Barlow

SGT Dolores M. Browne, who passed on July 13, 1945

Although often misreported that all three died on July 8, we uplift their legacies with love and truth—honoring SGT Browne’s final days with the accuracy and dignity she so richly deserves.

Little Miss Six Triple Eight: Joyful Legacy in Motion

Adding even more joy and inspiration to this historic day is Little Miss Six Triple Eight—a powerful youth leadership initiative that prepares young girls of color to walk boldly in the footsteps of the 6888th. These future leaders are learning to serve with pride, speak with purpose, and lead with heart.

In April 2025, this exceptional group represented Fort Worth at the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony in Washington, D.C., where they also participated in a stirring wreath-laying tribute at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, led by the Ministers Justice Coalition. Their voices rang out again in May 2025, as the Texas Legislature passed a formal resolution honoring the historic achievements of the 6888th Battalion.

Special thanks to Councilman Chris Nettles and the Fort Worth City Council for honoring Little Miss Six Triple Eight during a recent City Council meeting—recognizing these young torchbearers for their grace, leadership, and joyful commitment to legacy.

The When Doves Fly celebration—hosted by New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church and the Ministers Justice Coalition—is a heartfelt reminder that we are not only remembering history, we are shaping it. We celebrate those who cleared a path through struggle and those now rising with joy to carry their legacy forward.

Let their story soar—on wings of honor, in the strength of sisterhood, and with the unstoppable joy of justice fulfilled.
