TRAIN’EM UP, SOLDIERS! Why Fort Worth Needs Camp Buffalo Soldiers Now More Than Ever. By Pastor Kyev Tatum, Chaplain, Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association.

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

—Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

Across Fort Worth, we are witnessing a silent emergency. Too many of our children cannot read. Too many are growing up without basic home training, spiritual direction, or a clear sense of identity. In response to this crisis, we are called not to retreat—but to rise. That’s why we launched Camp Buffalo Soldiers—a church-based, heritage-driven, faith-fueled life skills initiative designed to train up the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and doers.

Housed at New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, Camp Buffalo Soldiers is inspired by the legacy of the historic Black cavalrymen who served our nation with honor, and the chaplains who served alongside them—teaching, mentoring, and guiding soldiers through spiritual and moral warfare. Today, our battlefield may look different, but the stakes are just as high.

In our underserved neighborhoods, children are too often handed trauma instead of training, neglect instead of nurture. Camp Buffalo Soldiers exists to rewrite that script. We blend biblical teaching, team-building, storytelling, and historical reenactments to cultivate both character and competence. We teach young people to read their Bibles, remember their ancestors, and rise with faith, discipline, and dignity.

This is not just a camp—it is a calling. A calling to reclaim the role of the church as a community builder. A calling to restore what the world has tried to erase: the identity, value, and God-given potential of Black children.

As chaplain for the Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association, I stand in the long tradition of men who served not only as preachers but as protectors of purpose—lifting soldiers who had been written off by society. Today, that same mantle must be taken up for the youth of Fort Worth. They are not problems to fix, but promises to fulfill.

At Camp Buffalo Soldiers, we’re not asking for permission to save our children. We’ve already accepted the mission. And with God’s help, we will continue to train them up—not just for success in life, but for service in the Lord’s army.

Because if we don’t, who will?
