Tending to the Forgotten Leaves

Veterans Day | November 11, 2025

New Trinity Cemetery, Haltom City, Texas

In the hush of hallowed Texas ground,

Where broken stones and weeds abound,

The whispers rise from graves beneath—

The voices of forgotten grief.

They call us to remember well

The sacred stories time won’t tell:

Of enslaved hands that tilled the land,

And enlisted hearts who took a stand.

Beneath the soil, their lives remain,

In silence marked by rust and rain.

Yet here, their courage speaks again—

In roots of faith, and blood, and pain.

Once bound in chains, then sent to fight,

They bore our burdens through the night.

Their country turned a blinded eye,

Yet still they marched, and still they died.

In New Trinity’s quiet resting place,

Lie Buffalo Soldiers—strength and grace.

The Six Triple Eight, in France they served,

Though long denied the praise they earned.

Florence Rawls, her story veiled,

Now shines where history once failed.

With medals cast in honor bright,

Her name steps forward into light.

But hers was not the only name

That time and weather tried to claim.

For here lies Ransom, doctor bold,

Whose healing hands broke Jim Crow’s hold.

And here, where Reverend Fretwell lay,

Refused by white men of his day,

His widow stood with sacred pride

And claimed the land they had denied.

This ground, once bought with tears and trust,

Now calls the living to adjust.

No longer will neglect prevail—

We’ll tend the leaves and tell the tale.

So rise, young soldier, scholar, saint,

Your memory we will not paint

In faded hues of loss and shame,

But in the fullness of your name.

Let every child and elder know

The seeds you planted still will grow.

This is not just a place of death—

But of resurrection, hope, and breath.

Join us, as we work and pray

To honor them this Veterans Day.

Not in mourning, but in might—

To set forgotten leaves alight.
