“Chief Eddie Garcia should respectfully and immediately withdraw his application for Chief of Police in Fort Worth. It is the only honorable course of action given the breach in the integrity of this selection process.”
We were informed by city employees that former Dallas Police Chief and current Austin Assistant City Manager Eddie Garcia was allowed to submit his application after the publicly stated deadline of June 4, 2025. These employees expressed to me that this action was unfair to all other applicants who followed the rules and submitted their materials on time.
As native sons of Fort Worth, a pastors who serves one of this city’s most historically impacted communities, and a leader who works closely with law enforcement for the safety and dignity of all residents, we are deeply troubled by this revelation. In a city where Black residents account for nearly 50% of all use-of-force incidents despite comprising less than 20% of the population, we cannot afford a process that begins with exceptions and special privileges.
This is more than a procedural misstep — it is a disservice to every qualified candidate who met the deadline. It is a disservice to the current leadership of our city. And it is a disservice to the more than one million residents of Fort Worth who deserve a Chief of Police they can trust — someone who honors deadlines, respects the process, and leads with integrity.
The people of Fort Worth need a chief who is above reproach — not someone whose candidacy begins with favoritism. If we are to build trust, we must start with truth. If we are to have justice, we must demand fairness. And if we are to move forward as one city, we must not allow anyone — regardless of title or connections — to be placed above the process. - Pastor Kyev Tatum
