FIGHT LIKE FORTY-TWO: Honoring Buffalo Soldiers Month. 2 Timothy 2.
New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church | Fort Worth, TX 76104. Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr., Host Pastor
As Buffalo Soldiers Month comes to a close, we pause in sacred gratitude to honor a legacy forged in faith, fortified by courage, and alive in the soul of this community. What began as a simple remembrance became a stirring movement—a mission of memory, ministry, and momentum that will not be forgotten.
A Movement of Ministry and Memory
We opened with First Thursday Community Food Bowl, where love took the lead and service wrapped itself in smiles. Every box of food came with a prayer, every embrace was a ministry, and every act of kindness reminded us: this is what church beyond the walls looks like.
We marched forward with Give Mama the Money, a righteous crusade for school choice led by Pastor Kyev Tatum. This bold campaign amplifies the voices of mothers and grandmothers fighting for a better future for their children. Their demand is not for charity—it’s for justice. Every child deserves a choice, and every mama deserves a chance.
Legacy Comes Alive
In a historic honor, our youth have been invited to Washington, D.C. for the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony on September 3rd to pay tribute to the 369th Infantry Regiment—the legendary Harlem Hellfighters. These heroes fought not just wars overseas, but racism at home. Their sacrifice reshaped the promise of America. Now, our young people will walk in their honor—bold, upright, and unashamed.
That same spirit took root at Camp Buffalo Soldiers. There, young minds were shaped through hands-on history, horseback riding, storytelling, physical fitness, and good old-fashioned homemade ice cream. Thanks to our partners at Bravo Zulu Homefront, this camp is becoming a year-round refuge for mentorship, leadership, and faith-building across every season.
Faith. Fellowship. Freedom.
We hit the field at the Rube Foster Pitch Hit & Run Invitational, where youth from across Texas and even Oklahoma gathered to honor the “Father of Black Baseball.” These weren’t just games—they were gospel lessons in hustle, prayer, teamwork, and pride. From Crandall to Crowley, Mansfield to Grand Prairie, our young athletes learned that you don’t just play the game—you honor those who built the field.
And then came the holy celebration of Buffalo Soldiers Sunday.
Buffalo Soldier organizations from across North Texas filled New Mount Rose with strength, song, and the spirit of our ancestors. Pastor Tatum’s “Fight Like Forty-Two” message called us to fight the good fight—with faith, with fire, and with a future in mind. After service we shared meals, made memories, and rode horses in the name of heritage. It wasn’t just a day—it was a divine reunion.
A Final Salute on Sacred Soil
We ended the month on hallowed ground at New Trinity Cemetery on Buffalo Soldiers Day across the nation—where the stories of our segregated soldiers are written in stone and spirit. There, we lifted up names like Technician Fifth Grade Florence Marie Cole Rawls of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the only all-Black, all-women unit to serve overseas in WWII. We remembered her. We honored her. We vowed: we will not forget.
The March Continues
To every youth who stood tall, every elder who remembered, every volunteer who served, and every partner who believed—thank you. You didn’t just join an event. You joined a movement. You fought like Jackie. You served like Jesus.
Our history demands remembrance.
Our future demands readiness.
Our children demand action.
And God is still watching.
We give special thanks to New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church and the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas for their unwavering commitment to preserving, protecting, and proclaiming the sacred legacy of African Americans who served in segregated military service since 1866.
This is more than hard work—it’s heart work.
And we are just getting started.
