FIGHT LIKE FORTY-TWO. 2 Timothy 2:3-4.
FIGHT LIKE FORTY-TWO. 2 Timothy 2:3-4.
By Pastor Kyev Tatum For National Buffalo Soldiers Day – July 28, 2025 a Poem to Fight Like Jesus Christ and Jackie Robinson. https://blacktexans.blogspot.com/2025/07/fight-like-forty-two-2-timothy-234.html
Forty-two generations marched through time,
From Abraham’s promise to Bethlehem’s sign.
From heaven’s throne to Mary’s womb,
Jesus stepped in to break death’s tomb.
He fought with love, He led with grace,
He bore the cross, He took our place.
No soldier ever stood so true—
Yes, Jesus taught us to fight like forty-two.
In the heat of war, in trenches deep,
Buffalo Soldiers sowed what we now reap.
With broken boots and blazing stride,
They carved their names where truth can’t hide.
They fought for a flag that denied them rights,
Yet bore its stars through darkest nights.
With backs unbowed, they bled and grew—
They had the strength to fight like forty-two.
In a segregated tank in World War II,
A young Black man did what few would do.
Jackie Robinson stood and would not fall—
He answered hate with a higher call.
Court-martialed once for taking a stand,
Before he ever played before a fan.
But from Fort Hood to Ebbets Field he flew—
With holy courage to fight like forty-two.
Paul told Timothy, “Endure the pain,
Don’t chase applause or earthly gain.
Be a soldier loyal to the King,
Not tangled in the world’s quick fling.”
That kind of fight is bold, not new—
It’s soaked in fire, and forged in truth.
That’s the Gospel call, both tried and true—
To rise each day and fight like forty-two.
So now we gather, hearts in hand,
On Buffalo soil, on sacred land.
Where freedom’s fight has left its trace—
In every grave, a holy place.
At New Trinity, we bow in prayer,
For warriors and witnesses resting there.
Former slaves and soldiers too—
Buried proof they fought like forty-two.
Florence Rawls, with steadfast will,
And a sister from the 6888th still—
Their legacies in red, white, blue—
They kept hope in an envelope and fought like forty-two.
So will you march? Will you rise?
Will you see with justice in your eyes?
Will you fight with truth, endure, and pray—
And make this moment more than a day?
This is the call, this is the cue,
To hold the line and fight like forty-two.
For Christ, for Jackie, for every name—
Let’s carry the cross and not the shame.
Fight like the 6888th, mail in hand.
Fight like the Hellfighters who took a stand.
Fight like the Soldiers who built the West.
Fight like the Savior who gave His best.
Fight for justice, fight for peace.
Fight until the chains all cease.
Not with hatred, but with view—
Of love that teaches: Fight like Forty-Two.
FIGHT LIKE FORTY-TWO
From Jesus Christ to Jackie Robinson, from Buffalo Soldiers to New Trinity Cemetery—
We remember. We honor. We endure.
