“You can’t steal second base and keep your foot on first.” – Jackie Robinson

What do the Buffalo Soldiers, the Negro Leagues, and Major League Baseball have in common?

Everything.

And Pastor Kyev Tatum of Fort Worth, Texas is connecting the dots in a way the world has never seen before.

With a Bible in one hand and a baseball glove in the other, Pastor Tatum is leading a bold, faith-fueled movement that’s not just about preserving Black history—it’s about empowering the next generation to live with purpose, faith, and power. Through his leadership at New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church and the Ministers Justice Coalition, he is linking together these iconic institutions of Black excellence to launch a dynamic ministry model that’s transforming hearts and saving lives.

THE LEGACY LIVES ON!

BUFFALO SOLDIERS: https://youtube.com/shorts/77uPIwRHVXI?si=VQC6rnnsdPjijcCP

These brave Black men in uniform fought for freedom in a nation that still denied them basic rights. They were God’s warriors—disciplined, determined, and driven by duty. Pastor Tatum channels their legacy through Camp Buffalo Soldiers, where young boys are trained in character, history, and hope. It’s not just boot camp—it’s Bible camp with a mission to raise strong, spiritually grounded leaders.

NEGRO LEAGUES: https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/fort-worth/article286890325.html

Before the major leagues opened their doors, Black athletes built their own fields of dreams. The Negro Leagues weren’t just baseball—they were Black Wall Street with a bat and glove. Through Fun Over Guns: The Rube Foster Pitch, Hit & Run Invitational, Pastor Tatum introduces youth to the power of teamwork, strategy, and pride, all while honoring the league’s founder, Rube Foster, and showing that faith and sports can change lives.

From exclusion to inclusion, MLB became a platform for change—but only because someone had the courage to cross the line.

Enter Jackie Robinson—a U.S. Army veteran who refused to give up his seat on a military bus years before Rosa Parks. A former Negro Leaguer with the Kansas City Monarchs, Jackie made history when he broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. But his greatest strength wasn’t his bat—it was his character. He held fast to his faith, turned the other cheek, and stood tall in the face of hate.

Jackie didn’t just break barriers—he built bridges.

And now Pastor Tatum is walking boldly across those bridges, connecting Black history with Biblical truth, and using Jackie’s legacy to show young people what it means to win with grace.

INNOVATION IN MINISTRY: https://youtu.be/T7PeAaZkkwI?si=o0BhoNbJJDfq0gxq

This isn’t church as usual. Pastor Tatum is creating sacred spaces on secular ground—using baseball, history, and heritage to spread the Gospel in new and relevant ways. His ministry tools include:

  • Camp Buffalo Soldiers – A Christ-centered leadership program grounded in military discipline and moral values.

  • Fun Over Guns: Rube Foster Pitch, Hit & Run – A citywide alternative to violence, where kids learn sportsmanship, history, and hope.

  • Little Miss Six Triple Eight – Honoring the Black women of WWII who delivered the mail and dignity across the Atlantic, while empowering today’s girls to walk in faith and freedom.

  • Fort Twenty-Fourth Skill Development Campground – A literacy and life skills center named after the 24th Infantry Regiment, training youth for purpose and employment.

  • Grandmother Go To Globe Life – A joyful intergenerational outreach where elders and youth experience MLB games together, sharing stories and passing on the faith.

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Young people are leaving traditional church—but they’re not leaving purpose. Pastor Tatum meets them where they are and gives them a reason to believe again.

  • He teaches them that Jesus Christ is the ultimate game-changer.

  • He reminds them that legacy is a blessing, not a burden.

  • He shows them that faith, history, and hope can still win championships—in life, in school, in the community.

Jackie Robinson said it best: “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

Pastor Tatum is impacting lives by the thousands—not from the pulpit alone, but from the dugout, the parade, the campfire, the classroom, and the community.

BLACK ON BASE = FAITH AT THE PLATE.

“Black on Base” is more than a sports metaphor—it’s a ministry model.

It means our people are in position.

It means we’re ready to score.

It means we’re carrying our cross, our culture, and our calling to the next base of destiny.

Pastor Kyev Tatum and New Mount Rose are showing that the church of tomorrow can be bold, Black, biblical, and on mission—all at the same time.

This is ministry in motion. Legacy in action. Revival on the field.
