HOPE IN AN ENVELOPE: The Ongoing Legacy of the Texas 6888th Project and the Rise of Little Miss 6888th in Fort Worth, Texas. By Black Texans, Inc.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS - Since its inception in 2022, the Texas 6888th Project has blossomed into a long-standing movement of remembrance, education, and empowerment. What began as a simple tribute has grown into a statewide initiative that continues to honor the women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—America’s only all-Black, all-female unit deployed overseas during World War II. Their extraordinary commitment to duty—sorting millions of backlogged letters and packages to uplift the spirits of soldiers fighting on foreign soil—has become the spark behind a growing flame of pride and purpose in Texas and beyond.

From the moment we declared “Over My Dead Body” in tribute to Major Charity Adams and her battalion on Veterans Day 2022, the Texas 6888th Project has committed itself to preserving, promoting, and protecting the legacy of these unsung heroines. Each event and milestone since has reaffirmed that their courage was not in vain—it is a legacy that continues to breathe life into the next generation.

And with that mission came the birth of the Little Miss 6888th, a youth group—a vibrant and visionary extension of the project that equips young girls, particularly in underserved communities, to walk in the footsteps of these trailblazing women. Representing resilience, responsibility, and radiance, Little Miss 6888th is the future of the movement, ensuring that the story of the 6888th Battalion is not only remembered but lived through acts of service, scholarship, and sisterhood.
