FORT WORTH, TEXAS — History is about to be made in Fort Worth! On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., the Fort Worth City Council, led by Councilman Chris Nettles, will officially pass a historic resolution commemorating the trailblazing women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion — affectionately known as the Six Triple Eight — at the brand-new Fort Worth City Hall, 100 Fort Worth Trail, Fort Worth, Texas 76104.

This all-Black and Latina women’s battalion made history during World War II as the only unit of its kind to serve overseas, tackling the massive backlog of military mail and delivering hope in an envelope to American troops across Europe. Among the 855 members, 44 hailed from Texas, including three remarkable women right here from Fort Worth: https://libraries.uta.edu/news/honoring-local-6888th-battalion-members

• Technician Fifth Grade Florence Marie Rawls (née Cole) — enlisted in 1942 in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), later the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), Florence worked as a nursemaid before proudly answering the call to serve.

• Sergeant First Class Helen Beatrice Minor — a local waitress at the time of enlistment in 1943, Helen’s dedication and leadership helped break barriers in military service.

• Sergeant Lucille Smith (née Lewis) — a devoted teacher who joined the WAC in 1943, Lucille represented Fort Worth’s spirit of resilience and determination on the global stage.

These women were unmarried, childless, and undeterred — determined to serve their country and uplift the morale of soldiers far from home.

Fresh from receiving the Congressional Gold Medal and special recognition by the Texas House of Representatives, the legacy of the 6888th continues to inspire new generations, including through the charming Little Miss 6888th Ambassador Program, created to protect, preserve, and promote their enduring story.

This upcoming Fort Worth resolution marks not just a city’s acknowledgment, but a powerful tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and trailblazing spirit of these women who shattered both racial and gender barriers in the name of service.

• Join us on June 10 as we honor their memory and say: Fort Worth remembers. Fort Worth is proud. Fort Worth salutes the 6888th!
