Honoring a Hero: Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Stephanie Mitchell—A Golden Heart Behind the 6888th Ceremony.

The Texas 6888th Project delegation proudly honors Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Stephanie Mitchell for her extraordinary contributions to the unforgettable 6888th Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony in Washington, D.C. With a spirit of excellence and a heart full of compassion, Stephanie was the steady force behind the scenes—making sure that every detail was executed with grace and care.

From organizing transportation for family members and calming the nerves of anxious descendants to overseeing elegant display setups and ensuring smooth transitions from the ceremony to the reception, luncheon, and dove release at the MLK Stone of Hope Memorial—Stephanie’s fingerprint was on every moment. Her presence was not only seen, but deeply felt. She made sure that everyone—descendants, dignitaries, and delegates alike—was respected, comforted, and celebrated.

“Stephanie Mitchell and Elizabeth Anne Helm-Frazier are two amazing individuals who have hearts as pure as gold and commitment beyond comprehension. I thank God for the opportunity to work together with them,” said Pastor Kyev Tatum, founding director of the Texas 6888th Project.

In 2022, the same year the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, Stephanie Mitchell was also honored by the U.S. Army Women’s Foundation during their 13th Annual Hall of Fame and Scholarship Awards ceremony. Held at the prestigious National Museum of the United States Army, the event recognized trailblazing women soldiers and supporters whose legacies will inspire generations to come.

Stephanie Mitchell’s relentless dedication helped bring long-overdue national recognition to the all-Black, all-women WWII battalion that broke barriers and delivered hope through every letter they processed.

She is, without a doubt, a modern-day champion of legacy, love, and leadership—a true embodiment of the 6888th’s motto: “No Mail, Low Morale.” Thanks to Stephanie, morale soared.
