PELHAM, TEXAS — This Memorial Day Weekend, a profound moment in history will be brought to life in the quiet, sacred soil of one of Texas’s oldest freedmen communities. On Saturday, May 24, 2025, the Little Miss 6888th Ambassadors—a group of young girls proudly honoring the legacy of the groundbreaking 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—will be ceremonially escorted by the Buffalo Soldiers into the heart of Pelham, Texas for its Annual Memorial Day Celebration.

Pelham, once known as “Folks at the Creek,” was founded in 1866 by formerly enslaved African Americans. Today, it stands as a testament to Black resilience, faith, and community—a fitting place for this living tribute to American heroism and heritage.

Earlier this year, the Little Miss 6888th made national headlines when they traveled from Fort Worth, Texas to Washington, D.C. to witness the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony honoring the Six Triple Eight—the only all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas during World War II. During the ceremony, their presence was recognized by a featured speaker and spotlighted on CBS News with Capitol Hill Correspondent Nicole Killion. Their mission—to preserve, protect, and promote the story of the Six Triple Eight—continues to resonate across generations.

This Memorial Day, their journey leads them to Pelham. Not just to remember, but to inspire. Not just to observe, but to uplift.

The Little Miss 6888th Ambassadors will also honor the memory of three unsung heroines of the battalion—Mary H. Bankston, Mary J. Barlow, and Dolores M. Browne—who lost their lives in a tragic accident while serving in France in 1945. These women were laid to rest with honor at the Normandy American Cemetery, yet their sacrifice remains largely untold. This year, their names will be spoken, their service honored, and their legacy carried forward by the very generation they helped to liberate.

This Memorial Day, past and future will meet in the fields of Pelham—where the footsteps of emancipated ancestors echo in the songs of young legacy keepers. Where faith, memory, and purpose unite to tell a story that refuses to be forgotten.

From the dusty roads of rural Texas to the battle-worn fields of Europe, the story of the Six Triple Eight lives on—thanks to the courage of those who came before and the commitment of those who carry their torch today.

We don’t just remember—

We strive for those who paved the way.
