FAITH AT THE PLATE: Fort Worth Faith Leaders Step Up to Protect Our Children from Homicides and Suicides Gun Violence for Orange Summer 2025.
Declares Orange Summer 2025: Protect Our Children By Any Means Necessary!
FORT WORTH , TEXAS — With gunshots already shattering the peace in Fort Worth neighborhoods, local faith leaders are stepping up — determined to reclaim this summer as a season of healing, hope, and safety.
The momentum kicks off Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 12:00 PM with the 3rd Annual Fun Over Guns: Rube Foster Pitch, Hit & Run Competition at Gateway Park. Hosted by New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, this free event celebrates play, unity, and history, honoring Rube Foster, the Father of the Negro Leagues, who played in Fort Worth in the early 1900s.
“We must get a handle on gun violence, or gun violence is going to handle us,” says Pastor Kyev Tatum, President of the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas.
For the third straight year, the Fun Over Guns competition puts children and families first — sending the clear message that our youth deserve fields of play, not fields of violence.
But Orange Summer 2025 is just heating up.
The very next day, Sunday, June 1, 2025, at 4:30 PM, the community gathers at First Presbyterian Church Fort Worth for Guns to Gardens: Turning Tools of Harm into Tools of Hope, where surrendered firearms will be transformed by blacksmiths into garden tools and art — a powerful symbol of healing, renewal, and turning violence into growth.
Midweek, the Wednesday Worship Series begins June 4 at New Mount Rose, offering a fresh midweek space for praise, singing, and spiritual renewal. On June 5, July 3, and August 7, families will receive Orange Summer Food Bowls — Boxes of Blessings filled with free food and youth enrichment resources, thanks to partnerships with Midwest Food Bank and other local collaborators.
On Sunday, June 8, churches across the nation will stand in unity for Orange Sunday, a day of remembrance, resolve, and radical love, honoring lives lost to gun violence while lifting up youth voices and mental health care.
The celebration continues with the Juneteenth Magnified Vacation Bible School, June 15–19, bringing together children from across the area for a joyful, nightly program of faith, fun, and freedom, culminating in a baptism celebration.
And circling back to pure community joy, Saturday, June 21, 2025, brings the Candy Clark Car Show — a day of cars, family fun, and unity under the Fun Over Guns banner, reinforcing that positive, enriching spaces are key to keeping our children safe.
At the heart of it all is one urgent mission:
Protect Our Children — By Any Means Necessary.
“We wear orange for our children,” says Pastor Tatum.
“More lives are lost to suicide by gun than homicide in our communities — including among our youth. Orange Summer is about giving our kids something worth living for — a reason to hope, a reason to believe that summer can be safe, fun, and full of purpose.”
This summer-long campaign comes at a critical time. As gunfire disrupts neighborhoods like Rolling Meadows East, where residents like Johnathan Williams are fed up, faith leaders, caregivers, and community members are rising to meet the moment.
“My biggest pet peeve is firearms being discharged in residential areas,” Williams told local media.
“It impacts everyone, especially the kids.”
While Fort Worth police continue investigations and increase patrols, Orange Summer 2025 offers something just as vital: community-based solutions, visible hope, and places where children can simply be children.
Running from May 31 to August 31, 2025, Orange Summer unites churches, civic groups, and families across Fort Worth and beyond. Together, they are pushing back against despair and lifting up a banner of hope that says:
• We choose fun over guns.
• We choose life.
• We choose our children.
