Please Join Councilman Chris Nettles and the Little Miss Six Triple Eight Ambassadors as we honor the extraordinary legacy of the 6888th — including the three brave members of the Battalion from the City of Fort Worth, Texas.
Members serving from Fort Worth included Technician fifth grade Florence Marie Rawls (née Cole), Sergeant First Class Helen Beatrice Minor, and Sergeant Lucille Smith (née Lewis). Florence enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in 1942, which later became the Women’s Army Corps in 1943. Helen and Lucille both enlisted in the WAC in 1943. At their time of enlistment, Florence’s civil occupation was listed as "nursemaid," Helen’s civil occupation was listed as "waitress," and Lucille’s civil occupation was listed as "teacher." They were each unmarried and without children when they enlisted for service.
This special occasion follows two historic recognitions on April 29, 2025, The Texas 6888th Project and Ambassadors attended the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony in Washington, DC and on May 22, 2025, The State of Texas officially recognized the 6888th’s accomplishments.
It is only fitting that the City of Fort Worth now pauses to honor its own heroes.
