THE YELLOW ROSES FROM TEXAS: Fort Worth Delegation to Attend Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony Honoring the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.

Washington, D.C. – April 29, 2025 – In a momentous recognition of courage, sacrifice, and service, the Texas 6888th Project, under the leadership of Founding Director Pastor Kyev Tatum, will represent Fort Worth and the state of Texas at the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony honoring the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. The ceremony will take place on April 29, 2025, in Emancipation Hall at the U.S. Capitol, with additional festivities continuing through April 30.

Pastor Tatum and his wife, Tonya, have been invited to lead a distinguished delegation of Texans to Washington, D.C., in recognition of their work in preserving and promoting the legacy of the 6888th. This historic battalion, the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve overseas during World War II, played a vital yet often overlooked role in sustaining military morale by ensuring mail delivery to American troops in Europe. Among the 855 members of the Six Triple Eight, 43 hailed from Texas, including three from Fort Worth.

Honoring Unsung Heroes

“The 6888th faced racism, segregation, and wartime hardships, yet they performed their duty with excellence and determination,” said Pastor Tatum. “Their motto, ‘No Mail, Low Morale,’ was more than just words—it was a mission. They processed millions of backlogged letters and packages in record time, ensuring that soldiers remained connected to their loved ones. It is long past time that America recognizes their service with the highest civilian honor.”

The Texas 6888th Project was established to shine a light on these extraordinary women, advocate for their recognition, and ensure that their legacy is preserved for generations to come. Working in collaboration with the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, The Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association, and RosieLeetta Reed, the project has championed their contributions through legislative resolutions, public events, and educational initiatives.

“This is more than a ceremony—it is a homecoming of justice,” Pastor Tatum added. “For too long, the service of Black women in the military has been overlooked. This recognition ensures that the legacy of the Six Triple Eight is cemented in the hearts and minds of all Americans.”

The Yellow Roses from Texas: Carrying the Torch

Fort Worth’s participation in this historic event underscores the city’s deep connection to the 6888th. To honor these trailblazers, the Texas 6888th Project has established The Yellow Roses from Texas, a living tribute dedicated to preserving their history through education and engagement.

As part of this effort, the project has launched The Little Miss 6888th Historians, a youth public-speaking group that empowers young girls to share the story of the Six Triple Eight. Through storytelling, historical presentations, and community outreach, these young historians will carry the torch forward, ensuring that the bravery and resilience of these women are never forgotten.

A Lasting Legacy

The Texas 6888th Project continues to advocate for further recognition of the battalion, including educational exhibits, public memorials, and commemorative initiatives. As the nation gathers in Washington, D.C., to celebrate these unsung heroes, Pastor Tatum and the Fort Worth delegation stand resolute in their commitment to ensuring that the Six Triple Eight’s legacy remains a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.

“The spirit of the 6888th lives on in all of us,” Pastor Tatum said. “Their story is a reminder that service, sacrifice, and excellence know no boundaries. It is our duty to honor their legacy and ensure that their contributions are never forgotten.”
