The Hot Rodders Are Coming to Cowtown: American Graffiti Tribute Classic Car Show & Candy Clark Birthday Bash on June 20-21, 2025.

LUBBOCK, TX—For lifelong hot rodder Rich Puryear, American Graffiti isn’t just a movie—it’s a passion. The classic 1973 film, which captured the essence of 1960s cruising culture, inspired Puryear to embark on an ambitious project: assembling and restoring a collection of tribute cars replicating those driven by the film’s iconic characters (https://vimeo.com/1071101657).

His journey began in August 2024 when he acquired a 1955 Chevrolet, reminiscent of the car Harrison Ford’s character, Bob Falfa, raced in the movie. From there, Puryear’s collection grew to include a 1958 Chevrolet Impala, like the one driven by Ron Howard’s character, Steve, and Charles Martin Smith’s character, Toad, alongside Candy Clark’s Debbie. A 1932 Ford five-window coupe, similar to the one Paul LeMat’s character, John Milner, famously drove, soon followed.

Not stopping there, Puryear tracked down a Citroën 2CV, mirroring the one Richard Dreyfuss’ character, Curt, drove in the film, and a chopped 1951 Mercury akin to the car belonging to Bo Hopkins’ character, Joe the Pharaoh. The final piece of his tribute collection came in the form of a Vespa GS 160 scooter—just like the one Charles Martin Smith’s character hilariously wrecked in the movie.

Unlike exact replicas, known as “clones,” Puryear’s vehicles are tributes, preserving the essence of the original movie cars while incorporating mechanical upgrades and modern enhancements. His goal is not only to pay homage to American Graffiti but to share his passion with fellow enthusiasts by showcasing his collection across the country.

A Star-Studded Celebration: Candy Clark Birthday Bash & Book Signing

With his tribute cars now complete, Puryear is eager to hit the road, bringing the nostalgia of American Graffiti to fans nationwide. The upcoming American Graffiti Tribute Classic Car Show in Cowtown promises to be a celebration of both classic cars and cinematic history, highlighted by a special tribute to actress Candy Clark, who played Debbie in the film.

As part of the event, fans will have the opportunity to meet Academy Award-nominated actress Candy Clark at her Birthday Bash & Book Signing. Clark, a beloved figure among American Graffiti fans, will be signing copies of her book and sharing behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the film. This exclusive meet-and-greet offers a rare chance to connect with one of the film’s stars while celebrating her birthday in true hot rod style.

For classic car lovers, movie buffs, and American Graffiti fans, this event is shaping up to be an unforgettable tribute to a film that defined a generation. Don’t miss your chance to experience Hollywood nostalgia on four wheels and celebrate with Candy Clark in Cowtown!
