FORT WORTH, TEXAS - The Little 6888th Historians are packing their bags for Washington, DC—and now, they’re carrying a whole new level of power with them!
Today, just before their historic journey to the nation’s capital for the 6888th Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony and the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, the girls were blessed with an unforgettable surprise:
LPGA Hall of Fame Coach GLADYS LEE delivered not just golf clubs—
She delivered a message of hope, excellence, and unstoppable greatness!
At the historic New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth, she placed three full sets of clubs into their hands, along with one unstoppable spirit and a lifetime of lessons.
Coach Lee—a proud alum of I.M. Terrell High School, a National Black Golf Hall of Fame inductee, and a Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame legend—is a towering figure in golf and a relentless advocate for opening fairways of opportunity for young people of color.
And guess what?
She’s taking our girls under her wings!
Through her Roaring Lambs International Junior Golf Academy and the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf Program, she’s inviting 25 young queens to learn the game, the grind, and the greatness it takes not just to play golf—but to win at life.
Because golf isn’t just a game.
It’s about strategy. Patience. Purpose. POWER.
Coach Lee knows this firsthand.
While working for Dick Clark’s American Bandstand in 1986, she witnessed the power moves and life-changing relationships forged on the golf course. She made it her mission to open that world for our people—and today, she’s STILL making that dream real, right here in Morningside!
Her new youth training home?
New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, 2864 Mississippi Avenue!
Our home. Our girls. Our future.
WHY THIS MOMENT MATTERS
The Little 6888th Historians are more than travelers—they are torchbearers, carrying forward the proud and often overlooked legacy of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.
The 6888th—known as the “Six Triple Eight”—was the only all-Black, all-female battalion deployed overseas during World War II.
Facing down both racism and sexism, these extraordinary women achieved what many said was impossible—clearing a massive backlog of over 17 million pieces of mail in record time and restoring hope to millions of soldiers longing for word from home.
Among their ranks were 43 proud daughters of Texas—our beloved Yellow Roses of Texas—hailing from Fort Worth, Houston, Dallas, Waco, San Antonio, and small towns across our state. These women shattered Jim Crow barriers and gender norms, blazing trails not only across battlefields but through the very heart of American history.
Now, 80 years later, their heroic service is finally being recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal—the highest civilian honor Congress can bestow.
And our Little 6888th Historians will be there to witness—and help shape—the next chapter of that legacy.
THE VETERANS HISTORY PROJECT: THEIR VOICES LIVE ON
Our girls are not just attending the ceremonies—
They are MAKING history.
As part of the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, in collaboration with the Institute for the Study of Black Military Heritage, two of our brilliant young historians—Miss Torie Monroe Hunter and Miss Kailey Williams of New Mount Rose—will officially present and submit the oral histories of:
• Veteran Virginia Thompson
• Veteran Patricia Sterlings
These living stories, captured with care, love, and scholarly excellence, will be preserved forever in the nation’s permanent records—ensuring that the contributions of Black women warriors are honored, remembered, and never erased.
Through their faith, determination, and brilliance, Miss Hunter and Miss Williams are helping lift up voices that must be heard—and lighting the path for generations yet unborn.
