According to the Buffalo Soldier Educational and Historical Committee, a total of 43 women from Texas served in the historic 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female unit deployed overseas during World War II. Among these trailblazers were three remarkable women from Fort Worth: Technician Fifth Grade Florence Marie Rawls (née Cole), Sergeant First Class Helen Beatrice Minor, and Sergeant Lucille Smith (née Lewis).

Florence joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in 1942, before it transitioned into the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in 1943. Helen and Lucille both enlisted in the WAC in 1943. At the time, Florence worked as a nursemaid, Helen as a waitress, and Lucille as a teacher. All three were unmarried and without children when they courageously stepped forward to serve their country.

Their service, sacrifice, and strength have now been formally honored with the Congressional Gold Medal—the highest civilian award bestowed by the United States Congress.

In celebration of their legacy, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church is working to send our Little Miss 6888th Historians to Washington, D.C. to participate in the 6888th Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony. These young scholars have also been invited to take part in the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, where they will honor and help preserve the legacy of the 43 Yellow Roses from Texas, including these three Fort Worth heroines.

To make this historic journey possible, we need seven airline tickets. By sponsoring **one ticket—or more—**you are investing in a living legacy and empowering the next generation to protect, preserve, and promote the stories of these courageous women through our Little Miss 6888th Ministry.
