Stories Worth Saluting: An Oral History Project Honoring the Legacy of the 6888th – The Six Triple Eight – The Yellow Roses From Texas.

Experience Statement:

“Mail Was The Mission.”

— Master Sergeant (Ret.) Elizabeth Anne Helm-Frazier, 6888th Champion

Stories Worth Saluting is a transformative oral history project that honors the valor, sacrifice, and unshakable spirit of America’s veterans, with a special focus on the unsung heroes of color whose contributions have too often gone unrecognized. Inspired by the legacy of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the only all-Black, all-female battalion deployed overseas during World War II—this initiative seeks to preserve and elevate their stories with purpose, reverence, and urgency.

In the spirit of Joshua 4:21-22, where the Israelites were commanded to remember the crossing of the Jordan River as a reminder to future generations of God’s faithfulness and strength, Stories Worth Saluting acts as a spiritual memorial. Just as Joshua urged the sharing of that transformative moment with future generations, this project preserves the stories of the 6888th as a living tribute—a powerful reminder of courage, resilience, and service that will inspire and guide those who follow.

In collaboration with the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, the New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Fort Worth, the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas, and the Texas 6888th Project, Stories Worth Saluting captures the firsthand testimonies of veterans across generations. Each narrative echoes the strength and courage exemplified by the 6888th, weaving their voices into the fabric of American history and ensuring that their legacy endures.

At the heart of this initiative are the 43 “Yellow Roses” From Texas—a statewide tribute honoring the women of the 6888th through storytelling, ceremony, and civic engagement. In a profound act of intergenerational unity, students from public, private, and Christian schools across Texas will carry these oral histories to Washington, D.C., for a special ceremony at the Library of Congress on April 29, 2025. There, the stories will be presented as a living memorial to service, sacrifice, and the enduring legacy of Black military excellence.

Stories Worth Saluting is not just a project; it is a movement—a living testament to the sacrifices of those who served. It inspires future leaders, fosters racial healing, and builds bridges across generations. In the spirit of Joshua, it ensures that the stories of our heroes are shared, celebrated, and passed down to those who will carry the torch forward.
