RESOLUTION HONORING THE LEGACY OF THE 6888th CENTRAL POSTAL DIRECTORY BATTALION

“TEXAS 6888th DAY – JULY 8, 2025”


WHEREAS, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Fort Worth and the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas stand firmly in support of the principles of justice, remembrance, and equality for all people; and


WHEREAS, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, known as the “Six Triple Eight,” is recognized as the first and only all-Black, all-female battalion deployed overseas during World War II, exemplifying bravery, dedication, and an unwavering spirit under conditions of segregation and adversity; and


WHEREAS, on July 8, 1945, while stationed in Rouen, France, three remarkable members of the Battalion—Pfc. Mary Bankston, Pfc. Mary Barlow, and Sgt. Dolores Brown—lose their lives in a vehicle accident during their valiant service, and their sacrifice is further marked by the resolute actions of their fellow soldiers who pooled funds for dignified burials when the U.S. military refused to do so; and


WHEREAS, among the Battalion’s 855 courageous members, 43 were born and raised in Texas and are affectionately known as The Yellow Roses from Texas, representing the spirit and resilience of Texas heritage in the face of adversity; and


WHEREAS, in recognition of their outstanding service and sacrifice, the United States Congress awards the 6888th the Congressional Gold Medal, with the formal presentation scheduled for April 29, 2025, at the U.S. Capitol’s Emancipation Hall in Washington, D.C.; and


WHEREAS, Texas 6888th Day—observed on July 8, 2025—serves as a statewide day of recognition, reflection, and education designed to honor the legacy of the 6888th Battalion and inspire future generations of leaders, particularly women and girls of color, by celebrating the enduring spirit of patriotism, perseverance, and justice demonstrated by these brave servicewomen;


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Fort Worth, in partnership with the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas, hereby proclaims Tuesday, July 8, 2025, as Texas 6888th Day across the State of Texas; and


BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we commit to:

Honor the memory of Pfc. Mary Bankston, Pfc. Mary Barlow, and Sgt. Dolores Brown;

Celebrate the significant contributions of The Yellow Roses from Texas and the leadership of Commander Charity Adams and her officers;

Educate our community and the nation about the invaluable legacy of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion and its impact on U.S. military and civil rights history;

Inspire and empower future generations by acknowledging the historical struggles and victories of Black women in service to our country; and

Uphold the truth about patriotism, perseverance, and justice through ongoing public commemorations, educational initiatives, and community outreach.


BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that we, the undersigned, pledge our unwavering commitment to remembrance and action in honor of these historical heroes, ensuring that their sacrifice and legacy live on as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all.
