Freeman Field Freedom Fighter Fort Worth: Honoring Robert T. McDaniel and the Institute for Black Military Heritage at New Mount Rose
“Learning Our Legacy. Honoring Their Sacrifice. Leading Our Future.”
The legacy of Mr. Robert Tenneson McDaniel, a decorated Tuskegee Airman and lifelong educator, lives on through the transformative work of the Institute for Black Military Heritage at New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church. Founded in the heart of Fort Worth’s 76104 ZIP code—an area historically affected by systemic neglect—the Institute stands as a beacon of hope, history, and healing for the Morningside community.
Born in Mertens, Texas, on February 28, 1923, Mr. McDaniel graduated valedictorian from I.M. Terrell High School and later became a Flight Officer in the 477th Bombardment Group during World War II. He famously participated in the Freeman Field Mutiny, a nonviolent protest by Black officers against segregation in the military. This courageous act contributed to President Truman’s 1948 Executive Order 9981, which desegregated the U.S. Armed Forces.
After the war, McDaniel returned to Fort Worth, earned multiple degrees in mathematics and education, and served as principal of Morningside Middle School. A quiet but determined freedom fighter, Mr. McDaniel helped shape the lives of countless young people with dignity and discipline, leaving a profound legacy that continues to inspire.
The Institute for Black Military Heritage honors his spirit by providing culturally responsive K–12 STEAM education rooted in Black military history. Through storytelling, living history events, research projects, and leadership training, the Institute empowers students to understand their heritage and imagine a greater future. Key partners include the Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association, public, private and charter schools, DFW Tuskegee Airmen, and local HBCUs.
This Institute not only preserves the stories of Black soldiers from slavery to present-day service—it plants seeds of pride, purpose, and perseverance in the next generation. It is a living tribute to Mr. McDaniel’s commitment to education, equality, and excellence.
