Washington, D.C. | April 29–30, 2025 — The Fort Worth Delegation and Descendants will travel to the nation’s capital to participate in the long-awaited Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony honoring the trailblazing women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—widely known as the Six Triple Eight—the only all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas in World War II.

The solemn and celebratory two-day national tribute will include:

The Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony at the United States Capitol

The National 6888th Reception and Luncheon with descendants, dignitaries, and military leaders

A Sacred Service of Remembrance at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Stone of Hope Memorial on the National Mall

A special youth tribute by Little Miss 6888th at the Library of Congress Veterans History Project

According to the Buffalo Soldier Educational and Historical Committee, 43 courageous women from Texas served in the 6888th Battalion. Among them, three heroic women were residents of Fort Worth at the time of their enlistment:

Technician Fifth Grade Florence Marie Rawls (née Cole) – Enlisted in the WAAC in 1942 and transitioned to the WAC in 1943.

Sergeant First Class Helen Beatrice Minor – Enlisted in the WAC in 1943.

Sergeant Lucille Smith (née Lewis) – Enlisted in the WAC in 1943.

At the time of their enlistment, Florence worked as a nursemaid, Helen as a waitress, and Lucille as a teacher. All three women were unmarried and without children, yet stepped forward with courage to serve their country during wartime.
