“EAT MORE GREENS” Community Health Challenge.

Led by Rev. Kyev Tatum, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church & Farm Fort Worth | Fort Worth, Texas 76104

Rev. Kyev Tatum of New Mount Rose in Fort Worth knows that few things taste better—or nourish the soul more—than a pot of greens at Thanksgiving. At his family’s table, the highlight is a healthy trio of greens, lovingly prepared in remembrance of the late Mother Jimmie Willis, the beloved community matriarch who taught him how to cook. Known as “Mom” to many, Mother Willis carried on a tradition passed down from her Aunt Dessie Montgomery of Jefferson, Texas—mixing turnip, mustard, and kale greens with tender turnips and pork jowl, slow-simmered to perfection. For an added health boost, she often substituted chicken broth for pork.

This season, as families gather in celebration, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church and Farm Fort Worth are launching a grassroots wellness initiative: EAT MORE GREENS—a community health challenge focused on reviving traditional recipes and promoting the healing power of fresh, homegrown food.

Mother Willis’ Healthy, Healing Three-Green Medley is more than a meal—it’s a movement.

As part of this challenge, the church and its Farm Fort Worth initiative are offering hands-on gardening and cooking classes that blend cultural heritage with health-conscious living. These classes aim to uplift, educate, and nourish both body and spirit—especially in Fort Worth’s 76104 ZIP code, where access to fresh food remains a critical issue.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT

Rev. Tatum is calling for volunteers to help build Demonstration Gardens across the community through Farm Fort Worth, an urban agriculture initiative housed on the land of New Mount Rose. These gardens will serve as living classrooms—planted, built, and maintained with love—to teach residents how to grow and prepare nutritious greens.

The goal? To empower seniors, youth, and families with the tools to eat better and live longer.

Want to help?

We welcome volunteers, sponsors, gardeners, students, and dreamers to help design, fund, and build raised garden beds at the church and throughout the 76104 neighborhood.
