Grab your helmets and brace yourself—this isn’t just a trip down memory lane; it’s a full-speed, cleats-digging, whistle-blowing sprint through the hard-hitting, high-flying, and occasionally ref-infuriating days of Mean Green football under the legendary Coach Corky Nelson.
Buckle up, football fans—this isn’t just another sports story. Corky’s Boys is a full-throttle, laugh-out-loud, shoulder-pad-smacking ride through the wild and wonderful days of Mean Green football under the legendary Coach Corky Nelson. Part victory lap, part therapy session, this is what happens when a bunch of former UNT football stars get together to relive the glory, the grind, and the good ol’ days—when the only thing bigger than their shoulder pads was their love for the game.
And what a season it was. In 1988, the Mean Green stunned Texas Tech with a 29-24 victory and nearly shocked the Texas Longhorns before a controversial 27-24 loss. North Texas spent six weeks ranked No. 1 in Division I-AA and finished the season ranked No. 12 in the nation. Quarterback Scott Davis was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year, leading the conference with 2,848 total yards, throwing 12 touchdown passes and rushing for 11 more. He still ranks sixth all-time in single-season total offense for UNT. https://youtu.be/NanZk9wEIJo?si=hxiZbDO8IfaPevHc
Defensively, Rex Johnson was named a First Team I-AA All-American, and cornerback Kim Phillips was drafted in the third round of the NFL Draft—the highest draft pick from North Texas since that time. Eight players were named First Team All-Conference, and five members of this team have since been inducted into the North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame.
Corky’s Boys is what happens when a group of former UNT football warriors reunite to talk about the glory, the grind, and the gripes—because, let’s be real, some of those calls still haunt them. This all-star roster of Mean Green legends—including Marcus Camper, David McGinity, Thomas Green, Shawn Wash, Tony Walker, and Joe Walker (who still debates who had the best hands)—takes you behind the scenes of their most unforgettable moments. From shocking upsets over Texas Tech and TCU to the infamous “Excuse me, Mr. Ref, do you need glasses?” call against the Texas Longhorns, they break it all down with the kind of honesty only time (and maybe a few years of replay footage) can bring.
Produced by former wide receiver Kyev Tatum—who insists he could still run a go-route today—Corky’s Boys isn’t just a documentary; it’s a tribute to every underdog who ever took the field believing they could win. Because if there’s one thing these guys proved, it’s that on any given Saturday, they could take on the best, turn doubters into believers, and leave the refs searching for the nearest exit.
