Texas Delegation Stands Firm in Honoring the 6888th Battalion at Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony
Fort Worth, TX — At a time when Black history is being erased under the guise of dismantling DEI, Pastor Kyev Tatum and Sister Tonya Tatum of New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church are ensuring that the heroic legacy of African American servicewomen is not forgotten. On April 29, 2025, they will lead a Texas delegation to Washington, D.C., to attend the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony for the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion at Emancipation Hall in the U.S. Capitol.
This momentous event honors the only all-female, predominantly African American unit to serve overseas during World War II. Despite racial discrimination and the challenges of war, these courageous women cleared a staggering 17-million-piece backlog of undelivered mail in just three months, restoring morale for countless American soldiers.
As the creator of the Texas 6888th Project, Pastor Tatum is committed to ensuring that future generations know the truth about these trailblazing women. He has extended a special invitation to students and parents from Miss Endy’s Christian Academy and the New Mount Rosebuds Youth Ministry to join the delegation, giving young Texans an opportunity to witness history firsthand and carry forward the spirit of resilience, excellence, and service.
Awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2022—the highest civilian honor bestowed by the U.S. Congress—the 6888th’s contributions remain a powerful symbol of Black excellence, patriotism, and perseverance. The Texas delegation’s presence at this historic ceremony sends a clear message: We will not allow Black achievements to be erased, ignored, or rewritten.
