The Wheelhouse of Pastor Kyev Tatum of Fort Worth, Texas.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS - From civil rights advocacy to religious liberty, Kyev Tatum has dedicated his life to championing causes that uplift marginalized communities and preserve historical legacies. His expertise spans multiple disciplines, including education, healthcare, criminal justice reform, land rights, economic development, and historical preservation. With over three decades of experience in policy, program development, and public advocacy, Tatum has become a trusted leader and subject matter expert in addressing systemic inequities.

A dynamic researcher and historian, Tatum has worked tirelessly to uncover and share under-heard Black history in Texas. His work in historical preservation includes leading initiatives such as The Texas 6888th Project, honoring the all-Black, all-female 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, and writing Fighting Black in Texas: An Anthology of Black Texans Who Resisted Racial Injustice from 1868 to Present. His efforts to bring justice to forgotten stories and unrecognized heroes have positioned him as a leading authority on Black resistance in Texas.

In education, Tatum has been an advocate for equal access, student success, and community empowerment. As a former student assistant to the president of Tarleton State University, he gained early insights into higher education leadership. His ongoing work includes mentorship programs, youth engagement through the Youth Coffee Expo, and creating opportunities for inner-city students to explore careers in specialty coffee through the Inner City Coffee Exchange.

Tatum’s impact on healthcare advocacy is particularly evident in his fight to address food insecurity and health disparities in Fort Worth’s 76104 ZIP code, the lowest life expectancy area in Texas. Through Farm Fort Worth, a partnership with New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church and The Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association, he is actively working to establish urban agriculture jobs, fresh food access, and leadership programs for inner-city youth. His commitment to public health also extends to organizing events like the MLK Hunger Bowl, a community-driven initiative to combat hunger in underserved neighborhoods.

His work in criminal justice reform is equally significant. As President of the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas, Tatum has been a voice for those impacted by mass incarceration, police brutality, and systemic injustice. His advocacy efforts have included working on landmark cases, leading grassroots movements, and pushing for policy changes that promote equity and accountability.

Land rights and economic justice are central to Pastor Tatum’s mission. His initiative Black Land in White Hands: Healing and Rebuilding addresses historical land dispossession and seeks to create pathways for Black land ownership and economic empowerment. His upcoming book, From Bean to Bank: A Blueprint to Brewing a Better Economy for the Inner-City Community, further illustrates his commitment to economic innovation and sustainability through specialty coffee.

A pastor, historian, civil rights leader, and community builder, Kyev Tatum’s influence extends far beyond traditional leadership roles. Whether he is fighting for justice, preserving history, or creating opportunities for the next generation, his work embodies a relentless pursuit of equity, empowerment, and truth. His knowledge bank surpasses the wheelhouse of many in leadership, making him an indispensable force in the ongoing struggle for justice and progress.
