SAN MARCOS, TEXAS, It was a homecoming filled with gratitude, reflection, and heartfelt appreciation as Pastor Kyev Tatum returned to San Marvelous, Texas, welcomed with the warmth and generosity that define this remarkable city. After 20 years away, leaders from the Calaboose African American Museum invited Pastor Tatum back to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Willie Mae Mitchell Community Opportunity Center, a visionary project he helped bring to life in 1995.
The Mitchell Center first opened its doors on September 15, 1995, offering unprecedented services and support to the San Marcos community. What started as a dream became a thriving hub of empowerment, education, and opportunity for a city in need. Now, three decades later, the City of San Marcos and the Calaboose Board of Directors are embarking on a new chapter, transforming the center into an African American Museum, expanding its exhibition and office space to further preserve and celebrate the city’s Black history.
Pastor Tatum, reflecting on the impact of his time in San Marcos, expressed deep appreciation for the people who helped shape his journey. “I wanted to come back to San Marcos to say thank you for the lessons and blessings I received in this incredible community,” he shared.
In a touching response, Mayor Jane Hughson, who taught computer classes at the Mitchell Center in 1995, warmly replied, “thank you.”
The celebration took an even more surprising and humbling turn when Calaboose Vice President Michelle Burleson presented Pastor Tatum and his wife with a Key to the City lapel pin, a symbol of the city’s gratitude for his contributions. Overcome with emotion, Pastor Tatum acknowledged the kindness and hospitality of the people of San Marcos, saying, “We are truly blown away by the generosity and love from the beautiful souls in San Marvelous, Texas.”
As the community embarks on this new journey of preservation and progress, one thing is certain, the bonds between Pastor Tatum and the people of San Marcos remain unbreakable. With this rekindled partnership, the sky is no longer the limit, it is just the beginning.
Congratulations Pastor Tatum for your vision to make this happen and the work necessary to get it started.
