The 1988 North Texas football season under Coach Corky Nelson was one for the history books. With an 8-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Southland Conference play, the Mean Green established themselves as a dominant force in Division I-AA football.

Defining Moments

The season was highlighted by a statement victory over Texas Tech, 29-24, proving that North Texas could compete with bigger programs. Another marquee matchup came against Texas, where the Mean Green fought valiantly before falling in a controversial 27-24 loss. https://youtu.be/fPcZN6adx7U?si=OXFXBKw2JGEh85kO

During the season, North Texas spent six weeks ranked No. 1 in Division I-AA and ultimately finished the year ranked No. 12. Their explosive offense put up 330 points, a mark that still ranks eighth in school history.

Standout Players and Honors

Quarterback Scott Davis led the charge, earning Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors. He threw for 2,848 yards while accounting for 12 passing touchdowns and 11 rushing scores, cementing himself as one of the program’s greats. He remains sixth in total offense for a single season in school history.

The Mean Green roster was stacked with talent, as eight players earned first-team All-Conference honors:

Scott Davis, QB

Marcus Camper, WR

Scott Bowles, OT

Zane Paschall, OT

Keith Chapman, PK

Rex Johnson, DT

Kim Phillips, CB

Bron Beal, P

Additionally, DL Rex Johnson was named a first-team Division I-AA All-American, and CB Kim Phillips became the highest North Texas draft pick in modern history, going in the third round of the NFL Draft.

Legacy

The Mean Green were an offensive powerhouse, averaging 27.5 points per game and racking up 377.2 yards per game. Defensively, they were just as formidable, allowing only 14.5 points per game and 315.2 yards per game.

This team’s impact is still felt today, as five players from the 1988 squad have been enshrined in the North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame. Their resilience, talent, and unforgettable moments make Corky’s Boys of 1988 one of the greatest teams in Mean Green history.
