Lessons and Blessings: The Poem
Lessons and Blessings: The Legacy of the Mitchell Center
From Fort Camp Swift in forty-five’s embrace,
Where hope stood firm in war-torn space,
Through trials and strife, a future was sown,
In hearts of the faithful, strength was grown.
The Colored School, a beacon bright,
Lit pathways forward, dispelling night.
In humble halls, young minds took flight,
Dreams awakened by learning’s light.
A community hub, both hearth and heart,
Uniting souls, each playing their part.
From shared meals served to wisdom shared,
Lives were lifted by hands that cared.
The Charter School, where minds were free,
To grow, to question, to boldly see.
Foundations laid with steady hands,
Built the future in promised lands.
The Boys & Girls Club, a guiding hand,
A refuge for youth, a place to stand.
With laughter, love, and lessons near,
They found their courage, conquered fear.
The Calaboose, where stories dwell,
A sacred place where truth does tell.
Preserving voices, lives, and names,
Through sorrow’s depths, hope still remains.
Each chapter written, each life inspired,
By lessons taught and dreams acquired.
Blessings abound from this sacred place,
A testament to a people’s grace.
The Mitchell Center, through time’s embrace,
Holds history’s pulse, a sacred space.
A legacy born from love and strife,
An everlasting gift to life.
